All the Sound Era Tarzans in Movies (1932-1998)...Yeah, Ron Ely probably shouldn't be here (his films were really just TV episodes, edited into features), but his career as Tarzan and Mike Henry's are connected, so I figured, 'Why Not?'
Want a 'quick and dirty' rundown on the Tarzans? Okay...
1. Johnny Weissmuller (1932-1948): Olympic champion swimmer (1924, 1928), and most famous Tarzan, with the longest run (9 years at MGM, 6 years at RKO)...
2. Buster Crabbe (1933): Olympic champion swimmer and teammate of Weissmuller (1928); made one godawful Tarzan movie, then moved on to fame as Flash Gordon...
3. Bruce Bennett (1935, 1938): Olympic star in shot-put (1928), as Herman Brix; made two Tarzan serials, best remembered as only time in nearly 3 decades that Tarzan could speak full sentences... Had a long film career, lived to 100!
4. Glenn Morris (1938): Another Olympic champion (1936 decathlon). Possibly the worst Tarzan, ever; made one film and retired!
5. Lex Barker (1949-1953): Princeton dropout who succeeded Weissmuller; was married at one time to Lana Turner, and then Arlene Dahl...
6. Gordon Scott (1955-1960): replaced Barker; discovered as a Hollywood lifeguard; made perhaps the best 'Tarzan' movies, "Tarzan's Greatest Adventure" (with Sean Connery), and "Tarzan the Magnificent" (with future Tarzan, Jock Mahoney); went on to work in Italy on suggestion of friend Steve Reeves...
7. Denny Miller (1959): Made a micro-budget remake of "Tarzan the Ape Man" (with original footage tinted in color!); best known as the 'Gorton Fisherman' in TV commercials, for years...
8. Jock Mahoney (1962-1963): Ex-stuntman turned actor, replacing Scott as Tarzan; oldest actor to become Tarzan (44); became ill and nearly died making second feature, and retired from role...
9. Mike Henry (1966-1968): Ex-football player turned actor, replacing Mahoney as Tarzan. Although plan was for him to do TV Tarzan, he became very ill (bitten by Cheeta!), and sued the producers, quitting Tarzan and moving on, eventually to play Jackie Gleason's son in "Smokey and the Bandit" films...
10. Ron Ely (1966-1968): Replaced Henry for TV series; suffered a myriad of injures attempting to do his own stunts; played 'Doc Savage' after Tarzan...
11. Miles O'Keefe (1981): Model hand-picked by Bo Derek for her nudity-laced remake of "Tarzan, the Ape Man"; had no dialogue in film, but moved on to become character actor...
12. Christopher Lambert (1984): French star who made American debut as Tarzan in "Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes"; would achieve American stardom in "Highlander" films, and still very active, today...
13. Casper Van Dien (1998): Latest screen Tarzan, in most faithful Burroughs adaption, "Tarzan and the Lost City" (although film bombed); best-known as Rico in cult classic, "Starship Troopers"...
