Always an above average athlete, Dan Hackbusch idolized Captain Freedom growing up. The military seemed a good option after turning down several lower-tier college football scholarships. Initially Dan thrived in the regimented environment. After several years he opted for the Special Forces. Shortly after graduating from Army Ranger School, Dan found himself entwined in a friends credit-card scam. Guilt by association proved too much and Dan was court-martialed, all the while claiming his innocence. Found guilty, Dan spent 30 days in Leavenworth and was then summarily discharged. Disillusioned by his rapid fall from grace in the military, Dan was lost. Still wanting the thrill of soldiering, Dan joined a private security mercenary force and travel to hot spots all over the world. The work was bloody and the pay extraordinary. While loving his role as a protector of sorts, he still could not shake the tone of some of his missions. Often common civilians, while not necessarily killed, were treated as little more than scenery. Finally seeing his role as essentially a hired thug, Dan decided to quit the business. He also felt a need to atone for his many questionable actions during his years as a mercenary. His bank account allowed him to travel back to some the area where he sinned, and he took it upon himself to help those he could with both an open hand and when needed a closed fist. Encounters with several meta-humans led him to decide to take up role of a masked avenger to best continue his personal crusade. Finally retuning to the United States after coming to terms with his foreign transgressions, he took an active role in helping those in need. As the Crusader, Dan uses his well-honed strength and endurance in combination with years of intense military training. Forever forgoing guns, the Crusader plies his trade with fists of fury and a keen mind and conscience. Intermediate teaming with well established heroes has solidified his conviction that hero-ing is his true calling.
