Renfield is the former familiar of Count Dracula who was pulled from the Time-Stream in 1897. Renfield acted as an extra set of eyes and ears for the Count during his time in London. After several horrible acts, including at least two murders, Renfield has a crisis of conscious and decides to help Jonathan Harker, Professor Van Helsing, and Quincey Morgan protect Mina from Dracula. He is savagely beaten by Dracula to the point of needing surgery from Van Helsing. In Stoker’s novel he lives long enough to pass on information to the vampire hunters, but ultimately dies of his injuries. In reality it is at this point that he actually disappears into time. For unknown reasons, when Renfield reappears in 1992 he is completely healed of his apparently mortal wounds and has reverted to the appearance of a man in his 20s. After several years of self-loathing and hiding in the shadows, Renfield decided to atone for his past sins by helping those in need and joining the battle against the hidden vampire horde.
While not turned by Dracula, Renfield did gain some vampiritic powers and weaknesses. Age has either slowed greatly or stopped. He was strength in the 800-pound range and dexterity of an Olympic gymnast. Hearing and sight is greatly enhanced. He has infrared night vision, but as a result must wear sunglasses constantly due to extreme light sensitivity. While sunlight will not kill him, over-exposure does weaken him after several hors. This is mostly counteracted by the duster jacket he employs as part of his costume. Blood lust exists, but is minimal compared to a fully turned vampire. Renfield maintains his periodic need for blood by frequenting butcher shops after hours and occasional rare prime rib.
Eventually encountering Mr. Hyde, he saw a kindred spirit with a link to his own past. Renfield recalled the newspaper stories of Hyde terrorizing London Streets during his days of youth in the late 1800s. Now, Hyde was in fact doing good to make up for harm caused in the past. After forming a positive relationship, Hyde decided to sponsor the man out-of-time for membership in the Lost Heroes. Renfield also maintains a frequent association with Burke, Vampire Hunter and responds when called upon.
