Captain Mysterious thought he was the greatest sorcerer in the world, and thought himself best suited for leadership of the Champions of Justice, a team which he formed for the purpose of saving innocent people and preventing disasters that other people couldn't.

But as time passed, he began to have his doubts. First he was unable to do anything about the Darkness. Then he was easily bested by his evil brother Ti'khan. Later his leadership was usurped by the swordsman Brennon, who fought against Star Slayer in his stead. To add insult to injury, he was defeated by Brennon when the terrible secret of Burning Fury's true identity nearly tore the team apart. He knew he could have done better in holding the team together. He decided he had had enough when the Champions' newest and youngest member Starblast was slaughtered by the evil Demon Hand.

He came to the conclusion that if he could posses the most powerful weapon in the universe, he could destroy all evil forces on Earth. Such tragedies would not occur again. So he took it upon himself to assemble such a weapon, a sword called Zandrexyn which had been broken into three pieces by the sword's creators. This quest brought him into conflict with Brennon, and through treachery he was able to accomplish his goal. He left Carrion Castle with the third and final piece, and now the sword's power is within his grasp.
