The Lone Ranger rides into his next comic book adventure (#10) with a very rare black and white variant cover that portrays the masked man in what some fans say is a “dark and dismal” manner and should be avoided like the plague.
Prepared exclusively for Comic Collector Live, the John Cassaday
(Eisner Award Winning artist) rendition from Dynamite Entertainment is getting powerful “love-hate” reactions from Lone Ranger fans.
“When we posted the cover art on our website we thought everyone would be excited about the special variant,” said Joe Butler, CEO of Comic Collector Live. “But while most of the feedback has been positive, there are those who think this particular portrayal is actually a ‘betrayal’ of their favorite comic book hero.”
The main complaints have centered on the dark and foreboding manner of the Lone Ranger. Steve Boyd, CCL’s Research Director and event coordinator took a few phone calls from fans of the masked man who thought the hero appeared to be more like the Punisher. “You’ll either love this cover or hate it,” says Boyd. “ Some say they love the strength of the Ranger in this pose and the emotion is really intense.”
Butler, in announcing the special variant, was quick to pay homage to Cassaday and Dynamite. “Any time you can work with a great artist like John it’s an honor!” said Butler. “We are especially excited about the Lone Ranger series because it’s an American original. And we are thankful for the folks at Dynamite for allowing us to be part of this Eisner Nominated Best New Series!”
Comic Collector Live will be offering the special limited variant issue exclusively on its website www.comiccollectorlive.com and expects to offer a select number of issues at comic book conventions such as Wizard World Texas in Arlington, November 16-18th.

I got that in a email. I actually think the Lone Ranger image is kind of cool. As long as his actions don't betray the character I see nothing wrong with him looking like he's mad enought to fight.

I agree. The image is cool, but doesn't fit with the Ranger's image, that of a noble, honourable, HONEST cop (albeit a cop in a very different setting than most). I'd hate to see anyone mess that up.
With all the people today, on both sides of the law, with the attitude that "anything is allowed if it gets me what I want," I think we need a hero like The Lone Ranger, who always managed to beat the bad guys but without sinking to their level.

I am intrigued by this interpretation. The mostly rhetorical question is, "What could push the LR to this point?"
One cannot forget that while honest, noble and honorable the Lone Ranger was not acting as a cop i.e. Texas Ranger, in his adventures he was a vigilante who began his quest by seeking justice for the murder of his brother and the rest of his unit at the hands of Butch Cavendish.
An interesting side note while the Lone Ranger's first name is in dispute, some sources say Dan(iel) the last name Reid is canon and is also the surname of another masked vigilante, who is often said to be a descendant of Reid's.
Trivia:
Who is that other masked man????
20,000 quatloos (any one get this obscure reference)to the one who gets it right.
Oh well seems Mike has answered this one on another pic.... Drat and Darn! Foiled again!!!

What? You mean his grand nephew the Green Hornet? I'd like to see a movie tie in those two characters.
Mike I wouldn't want the Lone Ranger to have a anything goes attitude, but I think it's cool to see the Lone Ranger have a angry emotion just for something different.

We have a winner!!! They are supposedly working on a Green Hornet movie slated for a 2009 release. Perhaps their will be a reference in it. Perhaps a pic of the LR in a background scene. I agree though it would be nice for Brit to go up into the attic and find his G-uncles stuff or have someone deliver his uncles mask to him. Would be a nice touch and a tribute to the histories of both characters.

Yeah, that would be awesome! I'm also all for another Lone Ranger movie. Surely they can do better than the last one did at the box office. They had a lot of problems with that one including dubbing over the actor's voice, and taking the dumb measure of forcing Clayton Moore take off his mask legally. I think today they would see Clayton Moore's presence as great publicity. Too bad he's no longer with us.

I think what I admired most about this character was that he was a vigilante who never himself broke the law, never lost his self-control or his sense of decency. Having an angry emotion, sure; but I don't want to see him degrade himself with angry actions.
