Wayward City, NJ…Westside…Gang Territory

John Dark Jr. tried to sit up and look at his surroundings. His head felt like it was about to split open. Not only that but he was sure at least a few ribs were broken.  He tried to move his arms but they were tied. He finally managed to open his eyes.

The Midnight Avenger found himself tied to a chair in what appeared to be a sewer tunnel. There were several thugs sitting around a nearby barrel with a fire burning in it. A very large Russian man was issuing orders to the group.

“Now you have orders from F.H. I suggest you start. He wants this done tonight or else won’t get paid” the large Russian said in broken English.

John recognized the Russian from one of his father’s files, he was a mafia enforcer known by the codename Kremlin. A very dangerous man; even more so than the Dark Eagle if he remembered the reports correctly. He needed to come up with a plan of escape and fast. As he used the night vision lenses to scan the darkened corners of the sewer he saw his own gauntlets resting on a crate off to his right.

“Ah, you awake now? Yes?” Kremlin asked “good it’s better for you to see this first hand.”

Kremlin snatched the Midnight Avenger’s mask from his face. Then he lifted one of the thugs over his head and snapped his spine like a frail twig. The mafia enforcer threw his head back and laughed as he saw the disgusted look on John’s face.

“You monster” John shouted!

“No worries my friend, your time comes soon” with that Kremlin walked off into a connecting tunnel.

Westside…above ground

Voltage was pinned down in a fire fight with gang members outside of the First Wayward National Bank. Bullets were flying in all directions. The thugs not caring whether bystanders got hit or not, Voltage himself had to wait until he had a clear shot before firing off his thunderbolts. Then he teleported behind one of the gunmen and hit him with a thunder punch!

As he teleported up to each lowlife he struck each of them unconscious with his fists. But then he heard screams from down the block. Other gang members were outside of the all night liquor store mugging customers as they were leaving.  It only took Voltage a second to realize what was going on. These were all distractions, to keep him occupied.

“The important question is, what are they distracting me from” Voltage asked himself?

Tapping the small communicator in his belt he signaled Bombshell “what’s going on, on your end?”

“A lot of gang activity” Melanie answered “I thought you said they stayed away from this side of the city?”

“They usually do, something strange is going on tonight. Keep your eyes open for any larger schemes. I have a funny feeling we haven’t seen the worst of it yet.”

Elsewhere in the city…

The Dark Eagle, Kremlin, and a half dozen gang members stood outside the bayside warehouse preparing to break in. Kremlin let a smile cross his lips as he thought of what was inside. Franklin Harrier would be pleased once they delivered the device.

Kremlin ripped the large doors off the building and the thugs ran inside to secure the area. Dark Eagle and Kremlin entered last and searched for the device. Dark Eagle found it first. A three foot crate stood in the back with strange markings across its lid that appeared to be ancient symbols of some sort.

“This is it Kremlin. The boss will pay us well for this.”

“Hey boys is that a present for me? You shouldn’t have” Bombshell announced her presence before punching one of the hired thugs in the stomach.

“Get her” Dark Eagle shouted as he opened fire with an energy pistol he pulled from the pocket of his long coat.

The other thugs opened fire as well while Kremlin lifted up some old machinery lying around and tossed it in her direction. Melanie absorbed the first energy blast and used it to destroy the machine that came hurtling toward her.

“Come on guys; is this how you show a girl a good time? I was expecting something a bit less… physical!”

“Keep her busy” Kremlin ordered the others as he picked up the device they had come to retrieve and made his way out a side door.

“I can’t let them get away” Melanie mumbled to herself as she activated her communicator “Voltage; I need you at the warehouse down by the bay. They are after something.”

As Kremlin tried to make his getaway he found his way blocked by the electrical hero, Voltage “out of my way thunder brain.”

“Set the crate down and give yourself up before you get hurt.”

Kremlin dropped the crate and then charged Voltage. He hit with fists of steel before the electrical hero could teleport out of the way. Hercules felt his ribs crack as he flew backward into a parked car. As he got back to his feet he shot off a blast of electricity. The thunderbolt struck the large Russian in the chest.

“That tickled, now it’s my turn.”

Bombshell hit Kremlin in the back with a powerful blast of her own causing him to stagger and loose his balance. Then she hit him again to keep him down. This distraction gave Voltage enough time to recover and he joined in with his own blasts.

“What happened to the others?”

“The guy in the long coat escaped but all the thugs are unconscious” Melanie replied.

It wasn’t long before Kremlin was able to get up even under their bombardment. He picked up the crate and threw it towards them. Voltage hit it with a thunder punch and the crate shattered. The device it held ricocheting off the concrete.

It was a dark red shield of some kind. It was pulsing with crimson energy as if it might be radioactive.

Somewhere else in Wayward City…

“Alright Dark Eagle, let’s finish this” the Midnight Avenger grunted.

“Kremlin told me you were tied up.”

“You were misinformed, obviously.”

The Midnight Avenger extended his blades and lunged at the hit-man. All too late he remembered his injuries as pain shot through his body.  He falls just a foot short of his target as his wounds begin bleeding heavily.  The Dark Eagle let out a laugh as he drew his gun.

“This will be too easy. But before I kill you I want to know why?”

“Why, because you killed my father that’s why and because you are scum” John spat blood flowing from his mouth.

Back outside the warehouse…

Hearing gunfire Orion Smith got out of his desk chair and headed for the door to have a look outside. As security guard of the U.S. Customs, Wayward City building, he hardly ever has any excitement so he takes every opportunity he gets. Making his way outside, he see’s Voltage and Bombshell tangoing with some large man. He draws his gun and walks across the street towards them.

As he does a long dark limousine pulls up and a man wearing a business suit steps out. Orion can tell the man is dangerous just by the way he carries himself. He can also tell the heroes have their hands full with the other man so if this one tries something it will be up to him to stop the guy. Then Orion notices the glowing shield laying a few feet away from him.

“Guard, don’t let that man get the shield” Voltage yells at Orion as he delivers a thunder punch to the Russian!

The man from the limo snarls and runs towards the shield, but just seconds too late. Without regards to his own safety Orion lifts the shield. He feels a change come over him almost instantly. Now he was never a weakling, spending four times a week at the local YMCA, but now he felt really strong. His muscles tripled in size right before his eyes. His hearing and sight gained a new level of acuteness .

“No” Franklin Harrier screamed “that power was mine!”

The mob boss fired his own pistol towards the security guard. The bullets were stopped by the crimson shield that Orion had now strapped to his left arm. As Harrier fired another round Orion moved and dodged the bullet.

“Wow” Orion said to himself “that was just like what Keanu Reeves did in that Matrix movie!

At this point Franklin Harrier was back in his limo and the driver was speeding away. Orion turned toward the other fight and decided to lend the heroes a hand. He drew back and punched Kremlin in the jaw. The sound of breaking bones caught the Russian’s attention.

Orion had gained Voltage and Bombshell a moment to catch their breath as Kremlin threw a punch his way. He easily blocked it with his shield and delivered another punch of his own. Bombshell and Voltage both struck Kremlin in the back at the exact moment Orion delivered a haymaker. The Russian went down for good this time. His body didn’t even convulse, he just lay unmoving.

Lots of action in that one.
