Columbia snares two more "Spider-Man" films

Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi, star and director of the "Spider-Man" films, aim to spin more webs for Sony's Columbia Pictures.

The actor and director are said to be close to locking in a deal to return for the fourth and fifth installments of the studio's top-grossing franchise. The first three "Spider-Man" films have grossed $2.5 billion worldwide.

In hopes of containing costs, Columbia is considering shooting the films back-to-back starting in fall 2009, much like New Line did with "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, which filmed simultaneously for 274 days.

Producer Laura Ziskin had said she would like to aim for a May 2011 release for "Spider-Man 4," nine years after the original movie's debut. Jamie Vanderbilt ("Zodiac") is writing the screenplay.

Although there has been speculation whether Maguire would return to play Peter Parker, the studio said there was no question he would be back.

"The studio never considered any other actor. Tobey was our only choice and the only person we've discussed the role with," Sony spokesman Steve Elzer said.

The studio declined comment on which villains might appear in the next two films or whether Kirsten Dunst would reprise her role as Mary Jane Watson.

Sony also has stepped up development of the "Spider-Man" spin-off "Venom," first recruiting writer Jacob Estes to draft a script and recently bringing in scribes Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, who penned "Zombieland" for the studio.

Topher Grace played Venom in "Spider-Man 3," but it's unclear whether Sony would cast him for the "Venom" feature or bring in new talent.

You gotta be kinding me, and here are all the great heroes waiting for a movie to come, and Spidey is hogging up all the freakin' glory.

I don't know I can never get enough superhero movies. If it were up to me 50 percent of all movies and TV shows would be superhero.
Posted:  06 Sep 2008 18:12
Its getting to be that way, you know. Superheroes films are becoming VERY popular. Now if they can jsut take over tv. I already heard about a couple of tv shows Marvel is planning, and DC has Smallville, so maybe we're working up to it.

As long as they learn from their mistakesq (Spidey 3), then i'll be fine with it.

They should either bring in The Lizard (cause the Dr. C has already been introduced), King Pin (from DareDevil), or Mysterio (because with visual effect as they are now days, he would be an awesome character to see)

...and I wouldn't mind seeing Black Cat...

how is spidey hogging the screen?!?  it's not stopping the production of say, thor, captain america, iron man 2, avengers, watchmen, the spirit, wolverine, a new superman move, a new punisher movie, and all of the other superheroes we've seen this year like say, iron ma, hulk, batman, hellboy, the wanted graphic novel?!?  did you forget those punishment man?

i'm so glad they're bringing back tobey and sam!  a spidey film without them isn't a true spidey film at all.  it'd be giood to film both at once too because the actors aren't getting any younger, or any easy to sign for that matter.  however, aquiring the rest of the cast is still going to be difficult and essential to the film success.  bring on carnage!

and lectrohm, spidey 3 was still high class entertainment.  great action, funny, and different form the first two keeping the franchise fresh.  i suppose you could argue it was a bit crowded with villains but it's still an excellent film.

Everybody says Spidey 3 was bad, but I liked it. It wasn't as good as #2, but nevertheless, it was still pretty good.

Jones is right there, it was a good movie fun to watch--specially if you have that best freidn relationship.

but the comic book nerd in me is crying cause they did a false story and tried to cram too much into one movie.

One of the main things I didn't like was the portrayal of Gwen Stacy.
Posted:  07 Sep 2008 04:36
that too--wasn't she supposed to be nerdy? like peter? i sure as heck didn't mind though--Bryce Howard is cute.

but yeah, that and venom coming in on the meteor instead of the J.J.'s son's plane like it actually did.  and while the sandman story was the best, it was too much--they shoulda stuck with Venom.

Finally and the most important...Sandman did NOT kill Uncle Ben.

Maybe they should do a rewrite--like the Hulk.

The new one? That wasn't a rewrite, it was a completely different story, like all The Punisher movies.

A rewrite is a completely different story!

Ah, DUH! LOL.
Is that what there doing with Punisher War Zone?
Thomas Jane was supposed to be the role, it was supposed to be called Punisher 2.

So the second Punisher isn't a continuation?
Posted:  07 Sep 2008 18:59
I bet the second Punisher isn't really going to have much of a continuity anyway. It'll just be the Punisher running around killing bad guys.
Posted:  07 Sep 2008 19:10
^ yeah that's the Punisher. lol

I never really got into the Punisher. The movie came out in '04, but I didn't get around to watching it till four years later. I never cared much for his character in the comics.

I remember when he decided to mess with Captain America...he started shooting at him with his machine gun, Cap put his shield up to block, then stepped forward, reached out with his hand, grabbed the Punisher by the shirtfront, and slung him effortlessly behind him. I thought it was funny; the Punisher always thought he was so tough, but to Captain America, he was just another punk with a gun!

The Punisher is ok as a character. I think the first movie could have had more action. It was a little bit run of the mill. I think Rambo makes for a better action hero in comparison.
Posted:  07 Sep 2008 22:31
I liked the first movie. The actor did a real good job.
Posted:  07 Sep 2008 23:22
It was ok, I wasn't that crazy over John Travolta as a bad guy. I think the Punisher could have stood to have more of a personality like Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry. He should represent the public's anger over criminals dodging justice in the court systems. Just didn't get that same feeling as you get with a Dirty Harry movie.
Posted:  08 Sep 2008 00:29
But of course. They don't make movies like that anymore.
Posted:  08 Sep 2008 00:37
Just think if they would have done a Punisher movie in the Seventies they could have cast Clint Eastwood. That would have been a cool Punisher movie!

In the eighties they could have cast Kurt Russell.
Posted:  08 Sep 2008 14:21
Probably so. Kurt makes for a cool action hero.
Posted:  08 Sep 2008 19:32
Didn't they have one in the 80s?

In the first trailer of War zone, you see that it is a completely different stroy, you can see his family dies. It would be Punisher 2 or
Punisher: Welcome back Frank, but when Thomas Jane refused, they picked Ray Stevonson.
