Upon returning to the city of his childhood, John Dark Jr. finds it to be in the grip of those with less than honorable intentions. Realizing that the city has been in a downward spiral since his father’s death spurs the newly trained ninja into action for he is the only one capable of doing anything to save it. Donning his black ninja uniform and wrist blades he decides to canvas the city searching for signs of trouble. Deep down he hopes the trail will lead to his father’s murderer for he still has thoughts of revenge on his mind.
Finding a lone patrol car parked in an almost empty lot, John jumps onto the roof landing with the grace of a silent cat. As he crouches down he uses a ninja technique allowing him to concentrate to the point of blocking out all sound except those from inside the car. Several minutes pass before anything useful is heard.
“Officer Blake this is dispatch. We have a robbery in progress at the Kwick Mart down on 3rd Street. The suspect is considered armed and dangerous, approach with extreme caution, over!”
“Roger that dispatch, we’ll be on our way as soon as we can, we have our hands busy with a domestic disturbance down on Rose and Wilson” Office Blake replies kicking back in his seat and turning up the stereo.
“Sarge, we’re not dealing with a domestic, shouldn’t we get moving?”
“Settle down there Sam, we just have to give the Perp enough time to get away first.”
“Sir, isn’t it our job to catch the bad guys?”
“Okay rookie, listen up because I’m only going to say this once. We get paid to look the other way by the real law in this town. Don’t even think for a moment that the Mayor and Chief Wiggins are really in charge they’re just figureheads. Franklin Harrier and his Enforcers are the only authority we answer to. If you don’t, well let’s just say you won’t live long enough to regret it.”
John was disgusted by the level of corruption inside the police force. In a rage he used his wrist blade to cut the roof open like a tin can. Thrusting his hands into the car he pulls the officer out by the collar and slams him down on the roof.
“You listen here Blake, its scum like you who are making this city rot. If you weren’t wearing a badge you would no longer be breathing, understand?”
The cop just sneers up at him and laughs “you just made a big mistake buddy. The Enforcers will hear about this and when they do your number is up!”
“You tell them something for me then Officer Blake. You let them know that their time is coming to an end. This is my city and I am the new law!”
With that John, holding the officer by his throat slams him into the side of a nearby parked car then he turns his attention to the rookie in the passenger seat “I can sense that you are a good man Sam so I want you to do something for me. Spread the word at the precinct that there is a vigilante in town and that he vows to clean up the streets by any means necessary.”
Samuel Wilkins is shocked by this mysterious man in black and can only nod for the moment before gathering his wits once more “who are you?”
“I am the Midnight Avenger and I am hunting down the scum of this city starting with that armed robber.”
With that the dark vigilante was gone into the night. As John arrived at the convenience store he found the gunman at the counter waving around a snub-nosed revolver. The man seemed to be strung out on something. The clerk behind the counter was complying with his demands by placing money into a brown paper sack.
The Midnight Avenger burst in through the glass door and let loose a razor sharp shuriken striking the thug in his gun hand forcing him to lose his grip on the revolver. As the would be robber turned his head towards this new threat he cradled his newly damaged hand. John Dark brandished his wrist blade hoping it would be enough to scare the gunman into retreating. While the two combatants had their attentions on each other the store clerk drew a sawed off shotgun from underneath the counter.
He fired first at the robber dropping the man to the ground. Then he fired off a second shot in John’s direction as he shouted “get out of my store you costumed freak!”
John dove over a shelf holding potato chip bags and fell onto the floor of the candy bar isle. The clerk loaded another round into the chamber and fired again. John ducked down and ran as fast as he could past the two-liter soda bottles while using the metal shelves for cover until he reached the broken glass door he had come crashing through. Once outside he leapt up onto the roof and ran to the next building disappearing from view.
Back home John takes off the ninja uniform and places it along with his weaponry in a dresser drawer. Milena had just arrived and she was drawing him a hot bath. The thought of a bath made him smile for his whole body ached now that the adrenaline had left it.
“You could have gotten killed John. I mean I know we had training but you shouldn’t try to do this stuff alone.”
“I know but what else can I do? This city needs someone to save it from the mob. Who else is there?”
“You know I could help you John. If only you would let me. I had the same training, we could be a team” Milena said frustrated that the love of her life was trying to get himself killed.
“I don’t want you to get hurt” John replies “if anything were to happen to you I couldn’t live with myself.”
He climbed into the tub and felt the water wash over him renewing his body and revitalizing his strength. Then Milena shed her clothes and joined him. As the two bathed they brainstormed on how best to go about saving the city.
“What I need is better weaponry and some specialized equipment” John said “My wrist blade cut through the roof of a patrol car but the force of it bruised my wrist pretty good. Then I got shot at. I don’t know you think I need some type of Kevlar?”
“Any kind of armor would slow you down” Milena replied as she lathered up her Loofa and began washing her thighs “but I do know someone who could help with your weaponry.”
John slid towards her as if the two were going to share a secret and asked “who?”
“My brother Mike works for this research company called Cyber-tech. I’m sure he could come up with something.”
John kissed her in his excitement and hugged her close to him for several long minutes before releasing her “I love you.”
She smiled and replied “no you just like me for my body and my brains” with that she laughed and splashed him with water.
Later on at Cyber-tech Industries Milena introduces John to Mike for the first time. After a few minutes of reunion banter between the siblings Mike takes them to his laboratory to show them some of his inventions.
“My sister tells me you like to hunt at night and that you use wrist blades and shurikens for taking down the animals” he says with a wide grin.
“Yeah something like that” John answers “what do you have for me?”
Mike uncovers a table with several pieces of equipment lined up on it, the first is a black mask with green lenses sewn over the eyeholes “these are my patent pending night-vision lenses that automatically adjust to the amount of light in the immediate vicinity, they can also be switched to heat-vision in order to better track your targets.”
“I could really use something like that” John said excitedly.
“Just wait till you get a load of this than” Mike said pointing at two armored gauntlets.
John looked at them a moment and said to Milena “that could solve my wrist bruising problem if I can find a way to attach my blades to it.”
Mike smiled again and put one of the gloves on. Activating a hidden switch a blade extended out of the top and then retracted again as he pressed the switch a second time. John’s jaw dropped as his mouth silently formed a wow!
“I’m glad you like it” the inventor said “but it does more just watch.”
With that he aimed the gauntlet at a target on the far wall and pressed another button. A shuriken shot out of a hidden compartment on the bottom and imbedded itself in the center of the target.
“This glove launches the shuriken faster than a human hand can throw it and can send it further distances as well.”
After a moment’s thought John asked another question “what about scaling roofs. Sometimes I need to get onto a roof quickly. Got anything that can do that?”
“Of course it’s already incorporated into the glove as well” Mike said pressing yet a third hidden switch launching a grappling cable out of the palm which latched itself on to the rafters in the ceiling.
“Multipurpose armored gauntlets, I like it” John said enthusiastically.
Next Mike picked up the last item on the table, a plain looking black belt. Then he detached the buckle form it and turned it over in his hand powering it on. The buckle became a touch screen PDA and he tossed it over to John as he got out several small items from a hidden pouch on the belt.
“The PDA controls various electronic devices. These small circular chips are tracking devices that can be planted almost anywhere and are virtually undetectable. The PDA can then be used as a GPS to follow their location. It also wirelessly connects to satellite uplinks in order to connect this small headset to its counterpart allowing you to keep in contact with someone else.”
“A communicator” John asks “how far does it reach?”
“Without getting too technical, the range covers the entire city and then some.” __________________
