Comic Book Movie reports:

Quote:
After some speculation whether or not Mary Jane would be in Spider-Man 4 and 5, MJ actress Kirsten Dunst accidentally revealed to MTV that she will indeed be returning to the series.

"I'm in," said the actress matter of factly. However, when pressed to make the announcement official, Dunst quickly changed her tone, and rather cryptically added, "I'm not saying anything, I know there's rumors..."

Fanboys may remember that Dunst has a history of spilling Spidey spoilers. It was she who confirmed rumors that Sandman and Venom were the villains of Spider-Man 3.

Some have wished that the movie storyline would dump Mary Jane Watson in favor of Gwen Stacy--introduced in the last film. Gwen Stacy was played by Bryce Dallas Howard. No word yet if she will also be returning to play her character in Spidey 4 and 5.

The studio is targeting a May 2011 release for the fourth pic.

Oh well. Personally I woulda preffered someone else but Kristen is good, as long as they keep her looks from the first one.  They dragged her down a little in the second.

Yeah, her hair wasn't as red in the last two.

Anybody read the New day stuff?
Posted:  03 Oct 2008 23:41
Nope, but I heard that their marriage has been ERASED. It never happened. I know that Mephisto is the one that done it, but I know nothing else about it.

Yeah, it's kind of weird stuff going on. I got a few in the cheap box at the comic book shop. Seems like they are trying to rekindle that old magic from earlier days of Spidey, but I'm not quite getting the old vibe. Erasing history just doesn't quite work for me without the hope of bringing it back. I think maybe if they did it and said it will return and stay tuned to see just how it happens it would be better. Right now though I honestly don't think they ever intend to bring back the old continuity which can be kind of confusing to new and old readers.

Seems like Marvel is headed toward the same kind of issues DC did when the Crisis on Infinite Earths happened which I really like the multiple earths scenario when I can keep up with it.

Crisis on Infinite Earths

What's that?

Tobey signed a contract for Spidey 4&5, or more. And here are all the heroes wating to made into a movie, and spdiey hoggin' all the glory.

Tobey is smart. Why worry about finding roles that don't pay jack. Stick with spidey and make the dough.

Crisis on Infinite Earths was the biggest comic book even of the 80's. It destroyed all the parallel worlds and made them all into one. Thus the entire Justice Society of Earth 2 lost their world and were moved to Earth 1. Shazam moved from his world and on and on it went.

Oh and they also killed of the original Supergirl and the Barry Allen Flash

Sounds pretty interesting. But I hate it when they kill off superheroes.
Posted:  05 Oct 2008 21:31
Me too. I think that was the first to actually start that whole trend. It was also part of the storyline that introduced Superboy Prime.

I thought that Captain Mar-Vell was the one that started it with superheroes dying. Actually, I think that death of innocent characters in comic books in general was started by Gwen Stacy.

hey dunst's hair looks better less-red. what are you tlaking about anyone else? she's the a key element in the series.

Yeah but MJ's hair is more red.
Posted:  06 Oct 2008 02:15
yeah, but it was still red tinted and it's not like this is a sin city word for word adaptation.

That's a crimson red while Dunst is a strawberry blonde.

Now, I'm not going to go all picky either like those LotR fanatics. It's not to much of a deal to me.  It's not just the hair, she doesn't look too much like the character to me but she acts well and that is to me, 75% of the battle right there.

UPDATE:

Quote:
Previous reports, by Kirsten Dunst herself, that she was signed for the next Spidey movies seem to be wishful thinking on the actress's part. Sounds like head honcho Rami is leaning to losing the fake red-head, and MJ altogether for sequels 4 & 5. Did ANYONE think Dunst came close to "supermodel" pretty anyway? We didn't either.
We can easily imagine what the forthcoming Spider-Man 4 and Spider-Man 5 movies would be like without Kirsten Dust. BETTER!

None of us here at CBM thought she was right for the part of a super-hottie model Mary Jane anyway. Well, if the hints that director Sam Rami is sending out are indicative of what will happen to Spider-Man's squeeze, she WON'T be in the film--at least not Dunst.

“Kirsten, I’d love to work with her again,” Raimi explained to us this week, making it sound as if current plans to include Dunst for “Spider-Man 4” and “Spider-Man 5” are still up in the air. “I hope she’ll be written into it. I couldn’t imagine making one without her, and I think she’s an important part of the movies.” Nevertheless, Raimi admitted that the very nature of an episodic series requires that characters come and go.

Here, Sam Raimi implies that Kirsten Dunst’s character Mary-Jane wouldn’t be in the new Spider-Man movies! Hooray! He also hinted in the interview that one of the new Spider-Man villains could be a vicious scaly reptilian humanoid, though, so, is that the Lizard, or is he saying that he just MAY call Kirsten Dunst back? Hmmmm. Could go either way with that one.

In any case, CBM still remembers when the Spider-Man movies were great, but after a lack-luster Spider-Man 3--where Rami came close to mimicking Joel Schumacher by bringing in too many bad guys, AND the major bad idea of bringing Spidey on Broadway, we don’t feel so enthused any more. It seems at times like this comic book franchise has run its course. But this news is a good turn, and with the vast number of GOOD storylines, villains and just plain fun of the comic books, we think Spidey still has some legs if they get back on track.

Obviously, Spider-Man director Sam Raimi has sensed our fear and he wants to calm us all down the best way he can - by dumping Dunst. Now, if he develops Gwen Stacy, played by actress Bryce Dallas Howard, into Petey's love interest, he'll start to win us back.

Glory Days!

Hmm I don't think it's prudent to change actresses at this point or dump Mary Jane entirely. Spider-man 3 had it's faults but it was still an exciting movie to watch. Sometimes I think fanboys expect too much.
Posted:  18 Oct 2008 20:40
How are they going to write her out, I wonder.
Posted:  18 Oct 2008 20:43
I hope it's nothing to do with that whole One day New Day storyline.
Posted:  18 Oct 2008 21:04
I don't think so. Seems highly unlikely.
Posted:  18 Oct 2008 22:22
It doesn't make sense to me to center around Peter and Mary Jane's relationship and then just ignore it. They made that mistake on Superman III when they paired Superman up with Lana. I enjoyed that movie, but it lost some steam coming off of Superman II. Part of the reason I think was getting the movie goer so involved in Lois and Superman and then acting like he could just change his mind and go running around after another chick.
Posted:  18 Oct 2008 23:13
Yeah. Now if MJ had been a high school crush, or just some girlfriend that he wasn't really serious about, it would be a different case, but the way they've handled the relationbship in 3 movies, they can't end it just like that.

Do you think it would be a good idea to recast her?
Posted:  19 Oct 2008 00:34
No, she may not be a super model, but she's not ugly by any means. To recast would just alienate the audience. I guess I could see a movie that focused mainly on action than on Spider-man's relationship with Mary Jane. Then they could just give her a cameo, but so far they've managed to succeed by playing up to the girl's need for romance. Take that out and risk only the guys going to see it.

I'd like to see what happens to the Sandman. Forget Venom.
Posted:  19 Oct 2008 00:53
I say forget both the Sandman and Venom. Not that I don't like the Sandman, but there is no need to expand on him. Its time to introduce the Lizard.

Recasting the love interest of Batman didn't seem to alienate anybody. I don't think they would make Spider-Man 4 or 5 without a love interest. And that can't be anyone else but MJ unless they bring her in so they can write her out properly.
Posted:  19 Oct 2008 20:38
Batman has a new girlfriend every movie. He's like James Bond, but imagine if Superman started dating another girl that wasn't Lois Lane, or wasn't even Lana Lang?

Everybody looks at Peter and Mary Jane as a married couple. If Peter dates another girl it's like he's cheating on her.
Posted:  20 Oct 2008 01:17
Unless he dumps her, or she dumps him.
Posted:  20 Oct 2008 14:46
Yeah, but then it's a superhero soap opera.
Posted:  21 Oct 2008 03:17
Yeah, soap operas suck. But haven't the last two Spider-Man movies been that way.

Batman Captain America
Daredevil Fantastic Four
Hulk Iron Man Indiana Jones
Justice League Spider-man
Star Trek Star Wars
