I know this isn't exactly a superhero question, but I'm thinking about getting a Blu-ray player Friday and I wonder if it's worth the dough. Anybody have one could tell me if the picture is that much better than a regular DVD player?

It sort of relates to superheroes in that I watch all my superhero movies on DVD.

first off, it makes no difference unless you have an HD tv, the HDMI cable, etc.  secondly, i just got one alonmg with the tv and i love it.  i haven't been buying dvds for awhile now in anticipation of the the definitive blu-ray format, and i'm very pleased.
the picture is so perfectly clear that you can walk right up to the tv screen, inches from you face, and you still can't see and blur, pixels, fuzz, etc.
so far i've only seen iron man, speed racer, and hellboy 2 on blu-ray.
iron man was crystal clear, speed racer's colors were amazing, and hellboy 2 was the ideal blu-ray movie.  depending in what aspect ratio they have, they may still have small bars at the top or bottom for widescreen, but hellboy 2 was filmed in 1.85(as oppsoed to 2.35) so it filled up the whole widescreen tv.  shows like the office and smallville are filmed in a similar size, and fit perfectly on the screen.
also, with blu-ray being such a new format, some blu-ray players don't have the ability to do all of the features and settings, so i'd advise you don't go cheap and pay a little more for a sony or other good brand.  our sony blu-ray has worked perfectly so far.
with some movies wathcing them on blu-ray is like rewatching them for the forst time.  every detail is presented in a theater like fashion.  my father doesn't plan to see hardly any new movies in the theater with blu-rays being so good.
if you do get a blu-ray player it's important to shop around for the best deals.  wal-mart rarely has these "best deals" and often charges $30 for new blu-rays.  prices go down after time with blu-rays and i've found that amazon has the best price 90% of the time.  they have a direct link to blu-ray.com so i go their to see new releases and deals. example: speed racer was $30 at wal-mart, $20 on amazon.  the die hard series was $80 (roughly) at wal-mart but is currently priced on amazon for $55.  blu-ray.com also has great in depth reviews detailing the quality of video, sound, etc.wal-mart is just not great for blu-ray movies.  also, used ones are great to look out for.  we were able to run into spidey 3 for only $4 at a pawn shop.
so instead of buyinmg any more dvds, even if you don't have a blu-ray yet, i'd save up for a player and blu-ray movies.  they're the fututre of home video.  as the skrulls would say, "embrace change."

I saw a Magnavox Blu-Ray player on sale for 128 but the catch is it's only at 5-11 am on Friday at Walmart. They've got blu-ray disc movies from that time for 15 bucks.

What do you think? I tried to find info on this Magnavox Blu-Ray but even at Amazon I saw one with no customer reviews. Kind of scary I guess.

Is this Sony about what you got?

yeah i think so.  you may be able to find out more about the magnavox at blu-ray.com.
and did you say they're selling blu-ray movies for $15 from 5-11 am this friday?

That was in one of those ad papers you get in the mail. Had a picture of the Hulk movie, Iron Man, etc in Blu-ray. 5-11 Am. Can you get up that early? I'm seriously considering it. I usually get up by 8 Am. The earlier the better though so you don't miss anything.

woe, new movies?  i may have to get up at 9-10ish to see.  i don't think enough people do blu-rays for them to actually run out though.  we shall see.

I got there by 7, didn't see a blu-ray player, got some regular dvds that were cheap. A lot of stuff they had advertised I think was gone by the time I got there. I'm never getting up that early to shop again unless I really want something and then I'll get up early enough to make sure I can get it.

I was shocked how many people were up and moving around that early even teenagers were running around buying stuff. I figured it'd be only grandmas. You know they always wake up at 5 in the morning.
