Howdy comicguy! Don't know a lot about deadpool. What's his origin, powers, etc.
Posted:  19 Oct 2006 21:33
he's got no powers, he was a secret agent spy, and now he hunts down heroes for government.  he's in cable/deadpool, which is really more of a funny title, for instance, the great lakes avengers first appeared in deadpool second series #11.
comicguy, did u read the deadpool arc of ultimate spidey? it was funny, but i missed the last issue i think.

My favorite Marvel character is the Cat, from her 1972-73 series.  She also appeared in Marvel Team-Up #8 (April 1973), then disappeared in Giant-Size Creatures #1 (July 1974).

Greer Grant Nelson was working as assistant to Dr. Joanne Marie Tumolo, who was involved in a project to enable women to reach their full physical and mental potential. But Tumolo didn't trust the motives of the project's financial backer, entrepreneur Malcolm Donalbain, so she had Greer secretly undergo the process along with the regular test subjects. Sure enough, the project (which was really designed to create an army of super-powered slaves for Donalbain) degenerated into a superhero fight which left Greer, not just powered up but also equipped with a high-tech costume, the only one standing.

The story was written by Roy Thomas (The Invaders, Conan the Barbarian), who also edited the comic, and Linda Fite. The penciller was Marie Severin (Not Brand Echh, EC Comics), and the inker was Wallace Wood (Daredevil, EC Comics).

Any other Cat fans?

Sounds interesting, I'm not sure I've heard of a Marvel character named Cat beyond Hell Cat and Black Cat.

Tim,
If you've seen Hellcat, you've seen the successor to the Cat.  Whilst helping the Avengers (in issue #144 (Feb 1976) investigate the goings-on at her estranged husband's post, Brand Industries, Patsy Walker Baxter found a costume that resembled the one worn by the Cat a few years previously.  Captain America, rather unwisely, offered it to her.  Patsy jumped at the chance to become a superheroine, dubbing herself Hellcat.
The outfit couldn't have been one of the Cat uniforms, for several reasons:
1.  The Cat uniforms had a blue "cat's paw" emblem on the chest.  The Hellcat costume did not.
2.  The Cat uniforms had yellow cowls.  The Hellcat's was blue.
3.  Less obvious, the Cat uniforms provided their wearer with mechanically augmented hearing, optically enhanced night vision, and steel claws on the gloves and boots.  They did not enhance the wearer's strength, speed, or agility.  (Those were the benefits of Dr. Tumulo's treatments.)  Most accounts list the Hellcat costume as having micro-circuitry to augment her strength, etc.  At any rate, she certainly did not undertake Dr. Tumulo's conditioning.
I hope you get a chance to check out the original Cat some time.  Her origin story was reprinted in Stan Lee's "The Superhero Women" (if that's any easier for you to find).
Thanks,
Darci

Cool thanks for the history, I seem to remember reading some of this in a issue of Defenders I think it was. It was like a origin of Hellcat. I'll have to dig through my collection and find it.

Tim,
You might be recalling issue #44 "Rage of the Red Raja" (Feb 1977).  In it, Patsy recalled leaving the Avengers at Moondragon's insistence to undergo more training.
Hope this helps,
Darci

I checked that one is in my collection. I'll have to reread it again now.

Before all the hype came out for the new Fantastic Four movie, I was always a big Silver Surfer fan. Although the stories over the years have been cosmic in nature the Surfer has always struggled with real human emotions like doubt, guilt, loneliness, etc.Even though he possesses the power cosmic he's never lost sight of his humanity.

I've always thought the Silver Surfer looked cool, but I never got into collecting his books. Most of the stories I've read with the Surfer were as guest spots in other books.

As a guest in many of Marvels titles the Surfer always made an excellent ace in the Hole.

yep, I recently got some old Fantastic Four books at a comic convention guest starring the SS. Pretty cool story, it had Galactus the whole deal. It had to be like one of his very early appearances very early 70's.

I would wager that you have F.F. #123 with art work by John Buscema. I always liked Buscema's rendition of the Surfer. Solid.
Posted:  15 Aug 2007 17:51
yep that's one, and I've got the first two parts of the story to 121,122.

From my experience over the years, any storyline that involves Galactus is going to be a wild ride.

Check it, did you notice on the cover it's got a small pic of Nixon.  They used to like to stick him Marvel comics a lot back then didn't they? There's a old Hulk storyline with Nixon in it as well.
Posted:  16 Aug 2007 00:00
Buscema's version of Nixon seems to bear a striking resemblance to an angry Bob Hope.
Posted:  16 Aug 2007 15:55
Say you're right he does look like Bob Hope.

And Nancy Reagan looks like a young Agatha Harkness, while Ronald Reagan looks like an old Billy Batson.

That's funny, Billy Batson in his elder years.
