I don't know anyone has seen this interview which was show on BBC3 here in England last year. It's very interesting to watch.

That was interesting. Stan seemed to be leaving out the essential details of the story. Maybe not on purpose, but if I were doing the interview I think I'd want to know who came up with the idea for the look of Spider-man. It seems from the clip to indicate Stan came up with the name, the basic premise, and so forth but it looks like Steve Dikto came up with the actual costume and appearance of Spider-Man.

If so then by all rights he should be named the co-creator. He did create the half of the character if he created the character's look.

Stan seems to be looking at it from an entrepreneurial aspect. Like a business man that had an idea and he hired someone to carry out his idea and so Stan in his mind deserved all that came from that initial idea. Like someone starting a business and hiring employees of various talents to carry out their wishes.

Here's another person's view. From the same programme.

Alan Moore is such a unique character in his own right.

Very true. I love his writing even though he can come across as a bit of a ...whats the word..precocious individual. But I enjoy everything he's written. Although it always works better if you know the books or things he's referencing. Fortune would have it that I've read most of them.

For example I read Albion recently by his daughter (plot by Alan) and in it, it has Pansy Potts who is one of the characters in that Sparky annual I mentioned.

Alan Moore almost seems like a man out of his time doesn't he?

Speaking of which today I bought Dave Gibson's Watching the Watchmen. A truely great book for any comic book fan. Full of the pencil roughs for the original characters and page layouts. Not only that but snippets of Alan Moore's original notes and comments.

Also dug out my 'Alan Moore's Writing for Comics' published by Avatar. It a good read and very helpful for learning to write good comicbook stories.

Since you mention them I might as well link to them from our store section.

Writing For Comics

on stan lee, wizard magazine had a clip from a book about ditko, where the writer said ditko said stan wanted to have spidey's powers come from a magic ring, but ditko wanted to keep him grounded in reality.
alan moore can occasionally come off as a jerk, but there's no denying his comic genius.  did you know he sold an illegal hallucinogen when he was 18?  of course, that was form wikipedia so it might not be true.  but definitely alan moore is one of the most eccentric people i've ever known of.  i've only ever read interviews with him, never actually seen him talk, so that was interesting.
you should definitely read watchmen if you haven't.  i also highly recommend that you read 'the dc universe stories of alan moore'.  not only does it include many great stories like batman: the killing joke, but it also contains "whatever happened to the ma of tomorrow?",  the definitive last superman story.  it's the basis for the hype behind neil gaiman's upcoming "whatever happened to the caped crusader?"

Sounds like very wise advice. He's right I think it's easy to get focused on getting rich, but the work is what makes you rich and that's what you have to focus on if you are going to get anywhere.

yeah, a very insightful guy.
