Found this on the BBC website.

Batwoman is to make her comic comeback as an openly gay superhero.

DC Comics writer Greg Rucka told Comic Book Resources she was "a lesbian socialite by night and a crime-fighter by later in the night".

Her appearance coincides with a battle in Gotham City to take over Batman's cowl after he was seemingly killed off in November.

Batwoman and her alter ego, Kath Kane, will appear in at least 12 issues of Detective Comics from June.

"We've been waiting to unlock her - it's long overdue," Rucka said.

"Yes, she's a lesbian. She's also a redhead. It is an element of her character. It is not her character. If people are going to have problems with it, that's their issue. That's certainly not mine," he added.

Rucka admitted the hero's sexuality would cause some controversy saying: "I think there is going to be some media - I can't control it.

"You've got to remember, Wonder Woman got a haircut and that became news. So it will be what it is. Our job is to make the best issues of Detective that we can."

Batwoman was originally introduced to the DC comic world in 1956 as a love interest for Batman and has made cameo appearances in the comic series.

She was first outed by her creators in 2006 as a former lover of Gotham City police detective Renee Montoya and her elevation to alpha superhero has been celebrated by gay rights groups.

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation praised DC for their efforts to diversify their characters.

Yeah right. Sure I believe that. Like that's not what this is about.

Comics shouldn't cover junk like this in my old fashioned narrow minded bull headed opinion. For some reason I get the feeling I'm probably one of the more old fashioned narrow minded bigots that likes comics. I went ahead and said all those things about myself to save some passerby's the trouble. You can't say you don't like subjects in comics like this without getting hammered by somebody.

I just don't get why comics fans have turned so liberal over the last few years. The whole superhero story model that contrasts good from evil right from wrong you would think would attract more of us old fogey conservatives.

Oh well I can always write my own comics.

Oh if I said anything that goes against anybody's deeply held beliefs. I'm sorry I offended you. Not sorry for what I think, but it's not my intention to ever make anyone feel like their ideas are being attacked especially on a superhero site of all things.

Thanks Wayne for posting the story. I sure hope you didn't think I was ranting against your post.

I should shut up now, but it occurs to me. I wonder what's next? Gay transformers. More than meets the eye. Robot by day,  model by night. or hair dresser by day, robot by night.

no offenses from me Tim, I have agree with you on the subject anyway. I mean it doesn't so much bother me if other people are that way but don't shove it in my face.

You know the transformers almost have to be gay considering the male to female ratio of the robots. I mean other than Arcee, the pink female from the animated Transformers the Movie for those who don't know, I don't remember any other female robots.

But they're robots so I don't really see them needing that kind of companionship.

If I remeber correctly I think Arcee is going to be in the live action Transformers 2 except instead of a futuristic car she's going to be a motorcycle.

Well in the Infinite Universe of DC I'm sure there's an Earth which will remain forever in the Golden Age of the Ditko Black and White/Good and Evil thought concerning comics.

(I heard he was all for Spidey beating up Hippies in the late sixities.)

As for myself I say it doesn't worry me.I think it's just reflecting modern times. In a year or too she might turn out to be a shape shifter

Transformers I think are exempt from gender issues. Considering most people think of their cars as females, but robots built to defeat the evil Decepticons as male.

I'd say G.I. Joe is the most likely target for this nutty political correct movement. I hope they stick with don't ask don't tell though. Cause I don't want to know.
