BIG BLUE awakenings Part 11 by Wayne Clayton.
Sam slowly backed out of the washroom, closing the door behind him. ‘This wasn’t good’. He thought to himself. He was a man of science and what he had just witnessed didn’t fall into the realm of his knowledge. But then again nothing he had seen in these last few days did.
Retracing his steps he looked at the floor. The small pools of water glimmered in the low light. Sam realised that these were proof that what had just happened was not just a dream. He made his way over to the old dusty microscopes and found a glass slide. Wiping it clean he returned to the trail of wet foot prints. Foot prints which had been heading towards were Big Blue was sleeping.
He carefully dipped the slide into one of the pools and quickly placed the glass under the nearest microscope. Thankfully it still worked. And Sam soon focused on the small droplets which were fast disappearing. Before his eyes the water molecules were changing. Not just evaporating. They were becoming solid. In seconds he recognised the telltale structure as that of ordinary human skin cells.
Who was she? Sam wondered. From the look on her face she had not been expecting Sam to be there. And what was the connection between her and Big Blue? Much as he loathed too admit it he needed to see the General. Not only to find out more about his night visitor, but to provide him with the equipment he now knew he needed to bring Big Blue back into the world.
He picked up the phone and dialled out.
Three hours later Sam heard the seal of the main door hiss and swing open. The General stood to one side as the new equipment Sam had requested was piled up just inside the door. It was plain to Sam that the General didn’t want his own soldiers venturing further into the room then was absolutely necessary. So he thought it prudent to wait till they had been dismissed before talking to the General one to one.
“Well Doctor here it is. Now how about you telling me what your plan is”
Sam’s idea had sprung from the dream he had had. He explained to the General as best he could how it had occurred to him.
“At first I was stumped, but then I realised that Big Blue is in affect like a waterlogged ships timber found on wrecks in the ocean. In order to recover them the salt water must be flushed out of the timber and replaced with a stabilizing agent. If not the timber will crumble or crack once it dries out. Therefore in Big Blue case we need to do the same. Replace the current chemical agents with one which will neutralize and then drive out the toxic elements.”
The General sighed and Sam watched for some hint at what the General was thinking.
“Mmmm…And you think you can do this?”
“In theory yes. It’s just a case of extracting the current agents while we pump in the neutralizers at the same time. I’ve already worked out the ratios and ..”
The General had heard enough techno babble and cut Sam of mid flow.
“Ok Doctor you’ve got the green light. Just make sure your theory works, you won’t get a second change at this.”
“I understand General, I’ll do my best”
“Make sure that you do better than that Doctor.”
Now that the science was out of the way Sam searched for some way to begin to tell the General of the events of the night before. Just how do you tell someone that a naked woman broke into your top secret army base, fortunately the General’s keen eyes had already noticed that one of the metal framed chairs was now wedged under the door handle of the washroom.
“Got problems with the plumbing Doctor?” The General said tipping his head towards the barred door.
Sheepishly Sam began to speak.
“You could say that. Last night I had a visitor.” He paused to take a deep breath before continuing.
“A woman”
The General raised his eyebrow.
“A woman?”
“Yes I woke up to find a woman stood right were your standing” ,”she ran into the bathroom”
The General’s expression remained rigid.
“And she’s still in there now?”
Sam now bit the bullet.
“Er..no…she ..er..escaped..she..mm..turned into..errmm..water and washed down the drain”
Sam held his breath waiting for the General to explode. And he did but not in the way Sam thought.
“She turned to WATER!!!” His face turned almost red with rage.
“MIA!!!” He rammed his fist down on the nearby table and stormed out of the room, slamming the steel door behind him. Leaving Sam alone once more wondering what the hell was going on.
