BIG BLUE in ‘Q & A’  Chapter One
Character Created by Neo Gonzales   Story by Wayne Clayton

Sam had no idea how long he had been out. His mind was still reeling from his run in with the cold concrete wall, not to mention the steel hatch which had once confined the sleeping man known to him only as Big Blue.

He began to attempt to get back up to his feet, but soon realised that not only was he no longer laying on the floor, he now was sat upright and firmly bound to the chair from which he had carried out his visual of Big Blue. Sam finally opened up his eyes to find himself face to face with the man he had brought back to the land of the living.
But it was his former patient who spoke first.

“Who are you and where are the boys?” His voice edged with a questioning concern.

Sam looked up this was not how things were to supposed to go. Normally he’d be the one in control and asking the questions. Any doubts as to his patients’ mental condition after sixty years in a chemically induced coma seemed now null and void. Not only that but he showed no signs of any muscle deterioration as he paced slowly in front of him.

But although bound Sam still was a Doctor and his job was still to assess the mental state of his charge.

“I’m Sam Orton; I’ve been assigned as your Doctor”

Big Blue looked him up and down.

“You don’t look like a doctor and believe me I’ve known quite a few”

Sam thought it best to take things gently, telling a man he’d been in a coma for sixty years wasn’t going to be easy. Especially if you yourself didn’t know the events which had lead to it in the first place.

“I can assure you I am a doctor. You were involved in an accident” Sam hoped for his sake there was an accident involved somewhere down the line. Or else he’d be in trouble. But just in case he thought it best to dust off an old chestnut.

“An accident which might of caused you some short term memory loss”

Blue stood for a moment before speaking. It was true he didn’t know what had happened to him but that didn’t account for him waking up in an abandoned bunker. Especially one which the last time he had known it was full to the brim of both medical staff and soldiers, all focused on him and the mission.

“How do I know you’re telling the truth and that you’re not some Japanese double agent?”

Sam felt the ropes that bound him suddenly become much tighter. Convincing someone that you were not a Japanese spy had never cropped up in med school.

“Believe me I’m an American just like you”

Blue pulled up a chair and sat across from Sam. His steel blue eyes seemed to almost look straight through him. For the first time Sam began to study the man more carefully. His face was strong but young. Sam would have guessed him to be about twenty years old had he not known him to be at least in his 80’s. Even his tone of voice had a hint of youth about it.

The General had given Sam the impression that Blue was a man beyond other men but when he spoke he gave off no trace of superiority. On the other hand his stature was far beyond that of normal men. His physique was not unlike that of the cartoon Johnny Reb, and his uniform bore all the Red, White and Blue hallmarks of a true 1940’s American hero.

Sam decided it was his time to take the lead.

“I understand that this whole situation must be very confusing to you, but you have to believe me when I say that it is important you listen to what I have to say.”

The young man opposite continued to stare. Sam pressed on and tried to avoid looking into those big blue orbs which almost seem to flicker with some strange ghostly fire deep inside.

“You were involved in an accident which resulted in you been left in a coma. I’m sorry to say that you have been in this coma some considerable time. Therefore it’s important that you take things slowly so we can help you adjust”

Sam breathed out slowly before continuing.

“There’s no easy way to tell you this but since your accident in 1945 you have been ‘asleep’ for over sixty years. The year is now …2009.”

At First Blue showed no signs of response but then slowly Sam saw a grin begin to spread across the young mans face. A grin which grew into a smile before finally it erupted into laughter.

“Oh that a good one buddy, a real humdinger” Blue looked about him as if waiting for others to join his laughter.

“Hey Vinnie, you back there? Where did you find this goofball doctor?”, “ Sixty years, man you guys kill me”

“Hey guys? Guys? ” But there was no one to join in the laughter the room remained silent and cold.

“I’m telling you the truth. This isn’t some platoon prank. You have been asleep for a total of sixty-four years. The world and the people you knew have changed”

Sam watched Blue’s features change again as he began to soak in the information. He began to shake his head.

“No, no buddy who are you trying to fool? Look at me. If what your saying is true why ain’t I a grey haired little old man?”

“I think you already know the answer to that” said Sam softly.

“Yeah your right ‘Doctor’ I do. I was right the first time wasn’t I. You’re a little yellow snake in the grass JAP SPY” yelled Blue at Sam.

Sam reeled back in his chair as far as he could as Blue lurched forward, his fist clenched tight.

“You don’t fool me little Lord Haw Haw. I’m onto your game Tokyo Joe. You pick on the wrong guy to play mind games with buddy”

“In fact I think it’s time to play a few games of my own” And with that Blue’s fist began to shimmer and swirl with soft wisps of pale green vapour before suddenly bursting into a brilliant green flaming mass.

Sam recoiled, his eyes slamming shut as the heat and light stuck his cheek. Fear coursed through his body as he struggled against his bonds.

“I’M TELLING YOU THE TRUTH, I’M NOT A SPY, I’M NOT A SPY” screamed Sam blindly.

Suddenly the pressure sealed bolts on the main door popped open.

“Hey Blue boy you mind turning that down a might, your scaring the good Doctor”

Blue looked up towards the figure in the door way, and for a moment he was silent before finally he remembered to speak.

“Vinnie? Vinnie is that you?” said Blue questioningly.

Sam opened his eyes and turned to see General Layton walk into the light. His lined face casting shadows under the harsh sodium bulbs.

“You look awful. What the hell did those doctors do to you?”

“They made me a General Blue, they made me a General”
