BIG BLUE in ‘The Patient Man’ Chapter 3.
Character Created by Neo Gonzales Story by Wayne Clayton
She sat on the couch cereal in hand as she flicked through the channels idly. Looking out of the window she saw nothing but the blue sky over the banks of the lapping waters of Black Lake. It seemed such a long time ago that she had made this her home. Something inside of her had found some sense of comfort in been close to the waters edge. It’s cool breeze gently stroking the wind chimes on the back porch.
As she settled back to watch the images flash before her she suddenly began to feel the room start to vibrate. Within seconds the vibrations became a low rumble and then nothing. She looked out the front window half expecting to see a convoy of 18 wheelers fly by but the road was deserted.
On the T.V. the show she was watching was rudely interrupted by a female presenter her hair hurriedly swept back.
“We are getting reports of a massive explosion out in the desert. Eye witnesses are saying a huge mushroom like cloud can be seen rising up out over by Highway 51.”,” Residents as far away as Boreas City have felt tremors which may have been caused by this apparent detonation.”, “ I believe we can now cross over to our man on the ground Luke Benson, Luke what can you tell us?”
‘Luke’s’ image now appeared on the screen holding his microphone close to his face. Behind him was the billowing cloud hovering over the desert.
“Well Sarah, as you can see a mushroom cloud is spreading out behind me. I’m joined here now by local resident Billy Thomas. Billy you’ve lived here all your life, have you ever seen something like this before?”
“Sure thing Luke, back in 45’ I saw them there A-bombs going off like the 4th July”
“If I can interrupt you Luke I have a spokes man from the local Military base on the line now.”
“Sarah let me say that is incident is in no way the result of any military testing been carried out by the U.S. Army. Initial investigations have shown that there is no radiation risk associated by this freak event. Although we request people shut all windows and doors just as a precaution”
“What do you believe caused this massive explosion?”
“The most likely cause as we can see at this present time is that of a meteor strike, we have been tracking a number of astral bodies in close earth orbit and there is a small risk that we may see some similar impacts within the coming few days. But we see no major danger at present for people to worry about”
Mia let the cereal bowl slip from her grasp as she watched the screen.
“Oh My God, HE’S AWAKE”
Sam groaned as he slowly came too. He no longer felt the weight of the General on top of him. Opening his eyes he looked around him still in a daze.
“General?”
There was a pause before he heard the General speak.
“Over here Doctor” came the faint reply.
He turned to see the General sat up still holding his shoulder.
“Welcome to the Ground Zero Club son” he groaned still in pain.
“What just happened?” Sam said slowly getting to his feet.
“Big Blue just happened”
“Oh my God is he dead?” stammered Sam
“I don’t know? Here he comes now why don’t you ask him?” came the curt reply.
Sam looked in the direction signalled by the General and saw the remains of the towering cloud slowly drifting above him. At its root was a great wall of earth and crushed rock fused together by the heat of the explosion. And in the middle of it all walked the figure of Big Blue. On his face he saw the broadest smile he had ever seen.
“Vinnie did you see that? Boy that felt great.” Blue still shook with excitement, the adrenaline still coursing through his body.
The General looked up and furrowed his eyebrows. Sam caught his eye as he summoned the energy to speak.
“Wish I could say the same Blue. What the hell just happened?”
“There was a sniper up on the ridge” Blue turned and pointed back towards the smouldering creator.
“ No kidding, a sniper! And you just blew up half the Goddamn state just to get one guy? “
Blues face suddenly fell.
“Didn’t it cross your mind that it might be a good idea to catch the guy so we could find out who the hell he was?” growled the General.
“I’m sorry Vinnie I guess I got carried away”
“You guess?” “Now help me up and let’s get back to base before you get carried away again”
As Blue and Sam each grabbed an arm Sam began to try and come to terms with what he had just witnessed. Not just the fact that he had just survived an Atomic blast but also the fact Big Blue had caused it, maybe more worryingly he seemed to actually have enjoyed it with an almost youthful excitement. He didn’t seem to even stop to think about the consequences of what he had just done. It was like a game to him.
But that wasn’t all, as he helped the General back to the now scorched jeep he caught a glimpse of the General face as he turned for one final look at the devastation Blue had caused. Although he hadn’t said it Sam could tell the General was more then happy at the way things had turned out. And that worried the hell out of Sam.
