BIG BLUE and ‘The Hunt’ chapter 1..
Character Created by Neo Gonzales Story by Wayne Clayton
Blue strode out of the burning carcass of the helicopter, the flames licked around his ankles and the air hung heavy with bitter tasting rubber filled smoke. The magazines strapped to the side of the gun ship started to roast and spit under the heat before one by one they erupted into spinning balls of white hot metal. But Blue ignored all this. His eyes were fixed of the towering figure before him.
They had been tracking the beasts since they had entered the atmosphere, they had seen them spread out, descending on major cities across the U.S all that is except the ones which had landed here.
On returning from his outing in the deserts they found the air base on full alert. Blue had barely brushed the dust out of his hair before the General had bundled him into a chopper. He didn’t know what one was but as it took to the air he felt more then an odd sensation in what was once his stomach. That feeling didn’t go away as they flew fast and low over the desert and valleys toward Mouse’s Tank and the Valley of Fire.
Before setting off the General had pushed a small device into Blue’s ear and almost immediately he was almost deafened by the roar of the Generals voice as he shouted over the noise of the spinning blades above.
“Ok Blue this Doohicky will let keep us in contact with one another. I wish I was going with you but the Doctor thinks taking the bullet out of my shoulder is more urgent. Forces are spread a little thin but if you need back up we’ll get them to you as soon as we can.”
“Oh and don’t forget there may be civilians out there so don’t go ‘Boom’ unless you have too you understand.”
He understood but now as he walked towards the Cloven giant he began to see the terrified faces of the Japanese tourist. He had never seen one before now in person, only on the News Reels. For five long years he had been taught that they were the enemy, that they deserved what was coming to them. And that he’d be the one to pay them back for everyone who lost their lives at Pearl Harbour.
“This place is crawling with Japs Vinnie! Are you sure they’re on our side?”
Even though they told him the War was now over it was still burning bright inside of him. As he looked around him he saw no ‘Civilians’ only ‘Yellow Devils’ just as the mission he had been prepared for back in 1945 demanded.
The cry of the Cloven Machine broke him from his train of thought. Staring into its dome he began to start his charge. With each step he felt his power build within him. Now was the time to show his true metal. The creature leaped from the ridge of the valley wall and landed with a defiant roar. Its weapon now trained upon Blue as he raced towards it. The air around the forks began to hiss as suddenly it discharged its lethal energy. Lightening ripped across the air toward Blue, but he saw it coming and twisted his body accordingly, letting slip by to take out its destructive might on the twisted metal of the helicopter, turning it almost to ash on contact.
Blue returned the gift with a volley of his own. A blaze of green fire roared from his balled fists, melting the rock below as it speed toward its unearthly target. The machine stood firm as the flame rushed over it. The once dark skin began to glow white hot as it began to char under Blues assault, but still it remained whole.
Blue remembered what Vinnie had told him about how Johnny Reb had destroyed the beast. He would have to get closer and pierce the flesh while still soft. Nothing could withstand his might.
Gritting his teeth he bared down on the creature, leaping up at it, his fire seeking its heart. But with animal instinct the machine parried his attack, swinging its trident across its body and catching him in the ribs and hurling him off course into the rock face. Winded Blue fell in a heap at its base, scattering the tourist who had hoped to seek shelter from the ensuing battle. Seeing Blue dazed the beast quickly lunged forward and drove its forked spear down towards him. Blue sprang up to meet it and with arms out stretched grabbed the prongs, his feet sliding against the loose gravel until they found solid rock.
Once found he coiled and then launched himself forward, driving the beast back and then over before tearing the trident from its hands.
Scrabbling the machine sort to regain its footing but it was too late in a bound Blue was on it and plunged his burning fist into the dome. The Beast seemed to cry out as Blue hands began to sink into the bubbling hot metal. Pushing further and further until the molten flesh gave way and the wound erupted into cloud of thick blue sulphurous smoke.
The giant’s unearthly cry echoed through the valley as its limbs flailed helplessly. But suddenly just as it had fallen silent, shattered and broken under Blue’s grasp its call was answered by a deafening wail of yet another machine, one which unseen by Blue already was upon him.
With a single swipe of its mighty hand Blue found himself sailing through the air before landing hard against the unyielding rock. Tumbling and rolling down the track. Before coming to rest at the feet of yet another Cloven Machine, his forked spear readying to strike.
