Prokofy “Big Frankie” Lebed sat in a large armchair that reminded everyone in the room of a throne and that was exactly the point. He was the leader of the Russian Crime Syndicate and thought himself ruler over his people. The Jade Scorpion took her place standing on the left of his ‘throne’ as she would if she were his queen.
Seamus watched from outside in silence as he saw Ethan McKnight being pushed into the manor through a servants entrance. He wondered about this woman, whose name he learned was Erin Cross, and what her interest was in the house. Who did she work for? He would try to ask her again later.
Marcus Deimus roughly shoved the Count forward and into the room with a delighted smile upon his face. He was finally permitted to come face to face with his employer. And he was rather pleased with himself this far.
“Are you an idiot” Big Frankie asked the Greek “why did you bring him here?”
This caught Marcus by surprise, it wasn’t at all the welcome he was expecting “I…I…thought he would bring the Rook to us.”
“That’s brilliant, and why would I want the Rook in my own home? Better yet why do I want the Count here? Now I have to kill him or he will go to the authorities upon his release!”
“I hadn’t thought” Marcus began but a rustling outside cut him off.
Seamus hated the plan but Erin Cross was already on the move and he didn’t want her going in alone and getting herself killed. So he had no choice but to follow. She dove through the window and swept her leg knocking down the nearest thug. Then she was up on her feet with her pistol drawn.
“Everyone freeze where you are! You are all under arrest” Erin shouted.
“Do you not realize you are outnumbered?” Big Frankie responded and motioned for his minions to open fire.
The bullets came at her from all directions. As they neared within inches of her nose they suddenly stopped and fell to the ground as if by magic. Then she noticed Seamus had entered behind her and he was chanting frantically. Then he stopped and everyone stared in wonder as to why Erin remained unharmed.
Seamus had taken this moment to draw his own firearm, the large hellfire revolver that he had made himself and which had served him well this far. The sight of it alone seemed to give the others pause and had them rethinking their options when the woman spoke again.
“By the authority of the Metropolitan Police Service you are herby under arrest for weapons trafficking, drug running, breaking and entering, grand larceny…”
Big Frankie waved his hand to cut her off “I know my offenses but you are still outnumbered and MPS has no jurisdiction outside of Greater London.”
“We have a special warrant for your arrest” she countered “all we needed was evidence in order to make the arrest and escort you back to Scotland Yard.”
“But you have no evidence” Big Frankie argued “I have done nothing wrong.”
“What about kidnapping the Count of Carrion?”
“He was trespassing on my property. And if he says otherwise it will be his word against all my associates plus my security tapes.”
This guy was definitely good Seamus thought to himself. But it didn’t matter for he was already working up a spell in his head and at the same time allowing his cybernetic arm to remold itself as a blade. Then he let forth the spell that caused the entire manor to shake. The quake caused all of Big Frankie’s thugs to topple over giving him and the police woman the moment they needed to attack.
Seamus dove at one of the thugs with his blade but it connected with the stock of a rifle as the thug blocked. Then the rifle was smashed into his face knocking him backwards. He came back with a roar and sliced through the rifle and then jabbed the tip of the blade into the man’s chest.
During the distraction Ethan kicked the Greek in the back of his knee knocking him down. Then he kicked Marcus in the face sending the tall man sprawling on the floor. He looked around for anything he could use as a weapon and saw the Desert Eagle. He went for the shiny gun but Marcus was on him now punching him in the ribs. Ethan’s hands were still tied behind his back so all he could do was kick and try to roll away.
Erin Cross fought her way through the thugs and closed in on Big Frankie’s throne. The Russian pushed a button built in the arm of the chair and a secret trap door opened beneath the chair. Prokofy Lebed and his throne disappeared through the floor in a heartbeat leaving the Jade Scorpion there to take the brunt of the woman’s attack.
“You will not get your hands on Big Frankie” Jade Scorpion swore as she swung her stinger blade out towards the policewoman.
Erin was struck across the arm and the pain was instantaneous. A deadly poison was working its way into her bloodstream. But she fought through the pain striking out with an uppercut that connected with the Jade Scorpion’s chin sending the sultry thief reeling. As the trap door in the floor was just about to close however the Jade Scorpion slipped through its opening and vanished.
Sirens could be heard outside as Seamus finished taking down the remaining thugs. Unfortunately Big Frankie got away along with Jade Scorpion and the Greek. The woman’s groaning caught his attention and he rushed over to check on her. Using the spell of affliction he determined that the poison was fatal.
He shook his head in Ethan’s direction “she won’t last an hour.”
“We need to get her back to the Rookery. I have an idea but if the police stop us we’ll never make it.”
Seamus cast a spell of concealment which would make them invisible and helped Erin slip out a side door. Out in the street they loaded up in the Porsche and flew down the street towards Castle Carrion.
Ethan McKnight lifted the sword of Justice hoping it would grant him the angelic powers that it had when Gabriel Jones had wielded it. If this worked he would have the power to heal and should be able to stop the poison. The sword however refused to grant him anything. It did however send out a small pulse wave in the woman’s direction.
“Give her the sword” Seamus said upon seeing this.
Ethan placed the hilt in her hand and stepped back to see what happened. The blade flared to life and sent a cleansing energy coursing through her body. She gasped in pain as her shoulders seemed to burn. Then white angelic wings sprouted from her back. She stood up and stared at the two men in shock.
“What happened to me?”
“You were on your deathbed until the sword of Justice chose you as its new host.”
Epilogue…
After sending an anonymous tip to the Saint Katherine’s Bay Police Department about the murder of their former Chief, the Rook, Shamus, and the new heroine Seraphim settled down in the lounge of the Rookery to discuss their options. Seamus Flannigan was adamant to have the three of them form an alliance against evil but the other two weren’t so sure.
“It sounds good and all but I’m not ready to just give up my job” Erin Cross said “I’ve just been promoted to Chief Inspector and as such taking down Big Frankie was my first assignment. Catching him has to be my number one priority. Don’t get me wrong I’m grateful you guys saved my life and I’ll help out whenever I can but I can’t just forget that I’m a constable first.”
“She has a point Seamus. I mean you know me I’m always up for a fight but I can’t go back to the States with you. My place is here in the Rookery as Count of Carrion. Boreas City is your territory. If you ever really have need of me I’ll be on the first plane over just as you were for me today.”
“I see your point. I don’t like it but I do see it” Seamus conceded at length “I’d love to stay here with you but I know my city needs me. Let us at least make a pact to join forces whenever the good of the free world is at stake?”
Seamus placed his hand palm down in the middle of them as he would if he were part of a sports team. Ethan and Erin placed theirs upon his in confirmation of the pact and they decided then and there that they would be known as the Rovers, fighting evil wherever it may appear. __________________
