Arriving in the arctic gave Captain Midnight an odd feeling as though he remembered this exact moment. Then he was hit with a crimson energy blast which knocked him off his feet as Lolita dove behind a thick mound of ice.
Cole Turner looked up to see himself staring back in his face “who are you?” the other asked him.
“I am you” Cole Turner replied “from the future” he added casually.
“Liar!” the original Captain Midnight shouted and then struck out with another crimson blast.
This time Cole dodged the attack and struck out with his own ebony blasts knocking the other off his feet before trying again “I’m serious, calm down before I have to put you down!”
The crimson bracer wearing Captain Midnight got back to his feet and immediately switched his bracers over to his surge ability then he charged his doppelganger. He delivered a haymaker that he was sure would put this imposter down. However the newer Captain Midnight’s built in physical resistance kept him on his feet as he was able to block and strike back with a right hook of his own catching the former on the jaw.
‘This is going to take awhile’ the ebony bracer wearing Captain Midnight thought to himself ‘we are too evenly matched’.
His former self retaliated with a roundhouse kick that would knock back any normal person. But Cole Turner was anything but normal now and the foot glanced off his leg without so much as causing him any discomfort. He grabbed his former’s leg and twisted it to the point of breaking knowing full well it wouldn’t snap while the surge ability was active. He was just trying to tire himself out at this point so that he might listen to reason.
Then Lolita stepped out from behind her cover drawing a futuristic looking sidearm and pointing it at the crimson bracer wearing Captain Midnight “enough of this”.
“Midnight Maiden?” the former Captain asked unsure, “why are you not wearing your Midnight Avenger Corps uniform?”
“What are you talking about?” Lolita asked in return “I am...er…was a Maiden but I was never a member of the Avenger Corps.”
“Actually you were” the ebony bracer wearing Captain Midnight replied “though I didn’t know that when I met you this time around. It wasn’t until Blue’s intervention that I regained both sets of memories.”
Turning to his other self he adds “does this at least give credence to my claim in your mind?” he then removes his dark mask to show that he is in fact the same man.
Captain Cole Turner of the original timeline removed his mask as well with a look of utter confusion upon his face “I…I do not believe this…you could be an imposter wearing a very realistic looking mask or some sort of evil clone perhaps?”
“Let’s try this” the other replied getting frustrated “you just had an encounter with Superion where you temporarily lost your powers. Then the two of you tracked down the lizard warrior Grog and just dropped his unconscious body into the freezing cold water. You were now on your way back to the Citadel to meet up with Shadow Hawk and the rest of his crew.”
“How did you? How long have you been stalking me?”
“Oh come on, you can’t be serious? You still don’t believe me? I cannot believe that I am too stubborn to see the truth!”
Lolita placed one of her hands upon each of their foreheads and projected their memories out onto the white ice backdrop and let them play out depicting the same scenes up until this point in time. Here the memories continued on for the newer Captain Midnight showing the encounter with the alien Clovan and his re-arrival into a now changed future timeline.
“There you go boys now stop arguing” she said with a smile.
“So those robotic monstrosities are the threat I’m here to stop? I need to get back to the Citadel at once to tell the others!”
“No you can’t. Trust me I’ve messed with the time stream enough already. Running into me…I mean you…or…you know who I mean anyway this can’t have helped matters. If you tell them then something else might change and it might not be for the better. Just leave it alone and pretend you don’t know what the threat is yet. Just remember you and the other heroes will win the day and change the future!”
The darker Captain Midnight said this with such conviction that the original had to concede at last “okay I’ll trust you, myself, or whomever on this. I’ll not say a word to the others.”
With that the ebony bracer wearing Cole Turner mentally activated the time portal once more; he tried to concentrate better this time around to avoid anymore close encounters with himself. With any luck he would arrive back in 1936 just after his departure and live out the rest of his life with Lolita as a constant reminder of his journey into the future.
Epilogue…
Cole Turner and Lolita arrived on the deck of a derelict aircraft carrier. Cole looked out over the ocean and recognized the view immediately. He was almost on the exact spot where he made his venture into the future. He didn’t remember any aircraft carriers here at the time of his departure though. Besides this was no 1920s Lexington-Class Aircraft Carrier. This was a newer model.
“We’re in the right place but not the right time” he said in frustration.
