Comic Book Super Heroes Forum / Super Heroes / Marvel Comics / 70s Defender vs. 70s Avengers (and maybe the JLA too!)

Can finally post to the forum, so wanted to address a subject I pondered awhile back. I was never really a big fan of the Defenders as a kid. I opted more towards the Captain America/Thor/Iron Man/Vision/Wonder Man line-up of the Avengers. The Defenders always seemed to be an odd collection of heroes. I appreciate them a little more now after starting to read many issue for the first time in their Marvel Essentials books. Several months ago while working on a 70s Defenders image I realized how powerful some of the early Defenders line-ups actually were. I mean who could really stand up to the raw might of the Silver Surfer, Hulk, and Namor. Add to that Dr. Strange and there is the base for quite a formidable group. If they could consistently work together, I seriously think they could take the Avengers on a bad day and perhaps the JLA (general 70s line-up) on a good day. Certainly Superman is always the trump card in any Marvel versus DC battle, but maybe in the right situation the Power Cosmic of the Silver Surfer could weaken Superman enough to allow the strength of the Hulk and Sub-Mariner to finish him off. Anyway, more specifically with Marvel, I think they could give the more popular Avengers a pretty good tussle. Any thoughts?   jerod

Superman has always had a blind spot where magic is concerned so Dr Strange would do well. Plus old Silver Surfer can change elements with his cosmic powers into anything he wants ie. Kryptonite?

There's another thing to consider too, the 70's Superman was a lot stronger than today's version unless they've strengthened him since the Byrne Revamp. Back then even Superman's costume was invulnerable. Of course like Wayne said magic was always a problem for Superman. Strange could send Superman to another dimension like he did the Hulk in the 80's unless Superman was wise to the trick and beat him up in super speed style before he could do any conjuring.

You're both right. In terms of the DC match-up Dr. Strange could be the key. I feel Stephen Strange is superior to Dr. Fate as a sorcerer/magician, so maybe he could be a big part in taking down Superman. If Superman is neutralized, who then would handle the Flash, who can be quite powerfull if used properly? What to about the Avengers?

I guess it would all boil down to who had the best plan. Taken by surprise the Justice League would just get zapped by Strange, but if they took the Marvel universe first the speed of the Flash and Superman would be too much for them, but then again you've got a major battle for Superman with Thor and the Hulk. If they teamed up together against Superman he could get knocked out.

And as far as plans go battle strategies would probably be between good old Captain America and Batman. Batman is always prepared but Cap knows more about wars.

Superman vs Thor : The battle goes to marvel, Thors hammer is mystical which would make any strike potentially lethal for the man of steel.

Cap vs Batman: The battle goes to Batman
Bruces steely resolve to overcome all obstacles would be too much even for Steve Rogers, but if its Bucky Cap thats a whole new ball game because Mr. Barnes has the killer instict.

And as for speed remember Quicksilver was an avenger and one mean mofo on top of that.

What I want to see would be Namor VS Aquaman!

You have to look at this way though Bono. Thor has fought the Hulk with the Hulk coming ahead just by a bit I'd say or at least a tie most of the time. In the comics Superman has beat the Hulk twice. Once really easily back in the Silver Age, and then the weaker modern day Superman beat him during the Marvel vs DC mini series.

I know Superman had a little tussle with Thor in the Avengers JLA books but I can't remember exactly what happened there. Have to go pull it back out.

Here's a thought. The new Red Hulk seems to be a bit more powerful or at least doesn't pull any punches compared to the Green Hulk.

So I want to know how Superman would fare against this new evil Hulk?

Good question.

This whole conversation has inspired me to start making some pages on great superhero fights.

First one - Superman vs Thor

You guys remember this one between the Hulk and Batman. Love how Batman survives having a car thrown at him. Just plain awesome!

Pretty cool. Wouldn't it be awesome to put a Marvel and DC character together on a movie like Batman and Daredevil?

I to LOVED the Batman-Hulk Treasury comic book in the 80s. I remember thumbing through it in a grocery store before actually buying it. It seemed like such an odd teaming even to a young teen. Like Tim I've never fogot the Batman jumping through the car scene. First time I'd ever seen the Shaper of Worlds, definetly still a strange character. Check this one out if you haven't.....jerod

You know the one thing I don't understand about Wonder Woman is they've shown her stand up to Superman, but how could she be anywhere near Superman's league? Doesn't she have to use bracelets just to stop bullets?

She was also the only one powerful enough to have a child with Supes if you remember the Kingdom Come storyline.

I have that in hardcover btw. It's on my bookshelf. Haven't read it in awhile though, maybe its time to reread it?
