Shadow Hawk and Raptor have cased out the Sojourn construction site for two weeks since Gray Mist slipped through their fingers. As yet no one has come back. It was strange really for it wasn’t likely that they could set up the project somewhere else without taking the equipment stored in the underground facility.
Shadow Hawk had thoroughly searched the structure from top to bottom and found all sorts of technical equipment that for the life of him he couldn’t figure out a use for. The body of CyberTech’s security chief, Nicholas Nomad known to them as Ashigaru during their last battle, was even still strapped to a table in one of the labs. It reasoned that they intended to reactivate him and would return for his body.
Somewhere just outside of his line of sight, Shadow Hawk heard a loud explosion. He hated to leave his post but someone could be in need of his help. Figures it would be his watch where the post was left unattended. Raptor wouldn’t be here to relieve him for another three hours yet.
“Sebastian, keep a satellite trained on the construction site. I need to check something out and don’t want anything or anyone slipping by while I’m gone.”
“Roger that John. I’ll let you know if I pick up anything.”
“Thanks” Shadow Hawk replies as he fires off a grappling cable and swings over to the location of the explosion.
What he saw next disturbed him. CyberTech’s robotic drones were leveling the First National Bank of Saint Katherine’s Bay. One of the drones was carrying a large trunk which Shadow Hawk presumed was full of stolen loot.
Shadow Hawk couldn’t help but feel this was only a diversion to take his eyes off the Sojourn construction site. But he couldn’t let them get away with all that money. He fired off some hawk-stars taking out three of the drones and gaining the attention of the rest.
“Take him out” the drone carrying the trunk shouted to the others.
Bullets and energy blasts began lighting up the sky all around him as Shadow Hawk dodge this way and that trying to avoid a potentially fatal injury. One of the bullets grazed his right thigh slowing him down a bit. He had to find cover quick. Shadow Hawk dove behind a lamppost willing him to be as thin as possible while he thought things over.
“Sebastian, I need backup, repeat I need backup. And send Talon over to Sojourn I think this is just a diversion!”
“Raptor is already headed to Sojourn. The satellite picked up Gray Mist entering the building just after you left. They knew we were watching them. Talon and I will head over to you.”
“No, keep Jess away from here, it’s too dangerous” Shadow Hawk replied as the line went dead “d@$# it” he swore more to himself, this was not a place for his little sister.
One of the energy blasts cut through the lamppost and the top half came crashing down on top of him. He just barely managed to roll out of the way before it crushed his legs. Then two of the drones were on top of him, smashing his face in with metallic fists. Shadow Hawk blocked what he could with his gauntlets but a few managed to slip through his defenses. Even his armored faceplate couldn’t protect him for long against this aggressive assault.
Then he heard something metallic smash up against one of the drone’s heads sending it toppling over. A metallic Bo staff swung against the other one as well taking it out of the equation. Shadow Hawk looked up into the face of Shadow Boy.
“Thanks” he managed as he took the offered hand and got back on his feet “I think you just saved my life.”
“That makes us even then” Shadow Boy replied “but I think I’ll stick around and help you take out the rest of ‘em anyway.”
The two of them turned their attention back to the small army of robots that was merging on them. Going back to back the two vigilantes prepared themselves for the battle to come. The robots came in swinging at them from all directions. Shadow Hawk activated his wrist blades and sliced the first two in half.
Victor Heavy swung his staff taking out the next few that closed within range. Then the whole seen became a flurry of punches and kicks as the two of them fought against the robotic drones. The robots seemed to be one endless mass of metal and Shadow Boy felt himself getting weaker with exhaustion. Using his Bo Staff he vaulted over the heads of the robots landing outside the circle catching a much needed breath of fresh air.
Then he saw a grappling cable fire up out of the swarm and Shadow Hawk ascended a nearby building in a matter of seconds. The robots seemed to snarl at this and several began scaling the building after him. They were not about to let the primary target escape them. Shadow Boy did a jump kick into the back of the head of one of the robots taking some of the heat off Shadow Hawk as four of them turned their attentions back to him.
“Eliminate the pest” the lead drone shouted to the others as their energy weapons came back online ready to fire.
“Oh $@#%” Victor said aloud “this is not good.”
Ebony black energy blasts struck down the robots from the sky causing Shadow Boy to look up. Captain Midnight flew into view blasting more of the drones down with expert efficiency. Shadow Hawk managed to drop the last few who were climbing after him and the three of them met up on street level.
“Good to see you Cap” Shadow Hawk said “thanks for the assist.”
“No problem old friend. I actually came looking for you anyway. Your friend at the Citadel was suiting up and told me the situation. I advised him to stay there and came here myself” as if noticing Victor for the first time Captain Midnight acknowledged his presence by asking “so who’s the new kid?”
“I’m not a kid” Victor’s voice rose angrily “I’m nearly sixteen and the name’s Shadow Boy!”
“Whoa there slugger, settle down didn’t mean nothin’ by it” then turning his attention back to Shadow Hawk he continued “we need to talk in private. It’s urgent.”
“Sure Captain, Shadow Boy why don’t you head over to the Sojourn construction site and check up on Raptor. Let her know the heist was stopped and see if she needs any help with Gray Mist.”
“Sure thing” Victor replied running off in the direction of the construction site.
“Okay so what’s up?”
“I heard about your little excursion to England.”
“Aren’t I paying for that enough already? If you’re here just to chastise me you’re wasting your time. I feel bad enough already.”
“No I just wanted to see how you were holding up. Even those of us trained for war have a hard time taking a life. Some have a hard time coping mentally.”
“Thanks for the concern but I’m fine.”
“Okay good. Now that that’s out of the way, let me tell you why I’m here. Marcus Deimus isn’t dead.”
“What the hell do you mean, isn’t dead? I killed him and buried him myself.”
“I know but he’s been resurrected. A necromancer named Eliza Trent has brought him back for her own purposes. The Avenger Corps went up against her a while back when we were fighting off demons. She escaped us then and has only recently resurfaced. We don’t know what her agenda is yet but I wanted to warn you. The Greek may be one of the undead but he could still retain some memories of his past and if he does…”
“Then maybe he’ll target me for revenge” Shadow Hawk finished.
“Once I find out more I’ll let you know. But for now watch your back.”
