Sebastian King didn’t make it through surgery. The gunshot to the chest was fatal despite the doctor’s best efforts. The would be robber and gunman Zackary Diesel now had to face murder charges as well. Jessica Dark found herself in the waiting area of a grief counselor’s office. She had finally managed to get her brother on the phone only to find out he had a run in with some zombie creature. After telling him his best friend was dead she took the elevator to the third floor and walked right into the reception area belonging to Dr. Philip Duke.
The receptionist said he wasn’t too busy today and could see her if she was willing to wait an hour or so. So here she sat flipping through some outdated Cosmo magazines reading up on how to know if you’re compatible with your mate and the top 10 signs a man is cheating on you. How was crappy relationship advice from a magazine supposed to help you cope with the grief of losing your loved one? Do they not think before placing reading material in the lobby? She would give the Doctor a piece of her mind once she went in.
Elsewhere…
The shock of his friend’s death hit John Dark extremely hard. His encounter with the zombie Marcus Deimus paled in comparison. The one man he could count on to stand by his side since his father’s death had been taken from him in a brief instant. What was this city coming too? This town, his home since birth, had grown darker since the Greek murdered his father. Criminals seemed to thrive in the blackened alleys of the night. Everything from cyborgs to were-beasts has made the city their home.
He thought long and hard about packing it in and moving to some small out of the way town no one has ever heard of. His father and Sebastian would probably both berate him for even thinking about giving up the good fight. But it seemed no matter what he did the city just kept getting worse.
“You can’t beat yourself up John. Just think of how bad the city would get if you weren’t around to clean up its messes.”
“I know that deep down Alicia. But then I think, ‘what if the city is getting worse because of what I do?’ I mean what if the criminals are only trying harder because in some sick twisted way they actually enjoy getting the $#! % beat out of them by me. It’s like someone is watching from the shadows as I take on thug after thug and they keep sending more at me out of some need for revenge.”
“So where do we go from here?” Alicia asked halfheartedly “are the Darkhawks officially disbanded or what?”
“I don’t know. I really don’t. I do know that Jess will probably hang it up, for good this time most likely. She tried once before but now with Sebastian gone…I don’t know if she can handle it anymore. You’re free to do what you want. Even if I don’t continue on as Shadow Hawk, it doesn’t mean you can’t continue on as Raptor.”
Meanwhile from another corner of the city…
A mysterious figure laughs hideously at the plight of John Dark from the safety of a luxurious apartment. This being watches a satellite feed on a television screen that is following both John and Jessica Dark in their current movements.
“I will break both of you” the shadowy voice says “the Dark bloodline will suffer the consequences of their actions.”
Later that same week…
John, Jess, and Alicia arrive in a limo along with Mr. and Mrs. King, Sebastian’s parents. The entourage of cars following close behind bearing various family, friends, and even police officers due to the nature of Sebastian’s demise. The sky was cloudy and gray threatening a torrential downpour very shortly. The viewing of the body in the funeral home only lasted half an hour before the casket was moved outside to the cemetery.
John Dark was among the pallbearers. Everyone said he should just sit and mourn with everyone else but he said he owed it to his friend to carry him to the grave. The preacher began with some biblical words of wisdom before moving on into the life of Sebastian King. For obvious reasons the majority of his last year seemed lacking to all but the few who worked alongside him policing the city they all called home.
As the casket was lowered into the ground the rain came at last. The downpour was indeed torrential. Those few who carried umbrellas even became soaked as the rain and wind tore the umbrellas to pieces and whisked them away. The service concluded at that point and everyone began making their way back to the vehicles in which they arrived.
John Dark held back standing by the graveside tears rolling down his cheek. His sister and Alicia both stood behind him tears apparent on their faces as well. Then an explosion shattered the silence as the limo ignited upon the drivers turning of the key. Sebastian King’s parents were both trapped inside screaming and banging on the windows trying to break free.
The cops on scene rushed over, radioing the precinct to send ambulances and the bomb squad. John rushed over towards the flames all the while searching the surroundings for any signs of the perpetrator. No one could be seen that wasn’t supposed to be there and John sighed. If he’d been wearing the mask his scanners might’ve picked up something.
From a luxurious apartment in downtown Saint Katherine’s Bay the mysterious figure frowns “that explosion was meant to take out the two Dark brats as well. Have you never done this before?”
“I’m sorry boss. I rigged the device to the ignition switch. How was I supposed to know they wouldn’t be in the car?”
“You idiot, you just wasted a perfectly good explosive. Do you think I just have them lying around?”
“But they are just lying around. There’s about fifteen more in the floor of the hall closet” the thug protested.
“That’s not the point. I paid good money for those and I don’t like them going to waste. The cost is coming out of your salary. But no matter that for now. Let’s discuss other options for ridding the world of the Dark family.” __________________
