The Rook armored up and grabbed his divine sword, Claoimh Solais, from its place of honor above his fireplace. Ethan McKnight swore he’d be ready when the alien menace arrived. Then he notified Erin Cross of the situation and she said she meet him at his castle within the hour. It was nearing that time already and still no signs of her. He wanted to make sure that they detained the entity long enough for Captain Midnight and his allies to arrive.
Suddenly a loud BOOM shook Carrion Castle to its core. The Rook ran outside to see what had happened. Erin Cross in the guise of Seraphim already had her own divine blade, Chrysaor, unsheathed and was doing battle with some costumed maniac. He drew his sword from its sheath and let the blinding light flood the sky.
Seraphim’s own powers protected her but Chaos was momentarily stunned by the sight. This allowed the winged angel to lash out with her fiery sword and cut deep into the alien’s pseudo-flesh. The fire burned deep causing Chaos to drop from the sky with a crashing thud on the ground below toppling a tree in the process.
“We have to stop him” Seraphim shouted at the Rook!
“Who is he?”
“The alien” Seraphim explained.
“What? He doesn’t look alien to me” Rook said swinging his sword in Chaos’ direction.
Chaos caught the blade between the palms of his hands and yanked it free of the Rooks own. Then he grasped it by the hilt and tested its weight before advancing on Seraphim. It became holy blade upon holy blade as the blinding light and fire intermingled in combat. Rook stood by helplessly trying to find an opening in which to regain his sword.
Seraphim was losing ground fast as Claoimh Solais cut into her side four times in succession. The wound seemed grave but her healing ability kicked in slowly repairing the damage. She dropped to one knee for a moment nearly exhausted from the fight already. The holy blade’s wound was harder to heal than a normal weapon would’ve been.
Rook took this moment to charge in and throw himself in front of his friend. Chaos swung down with the blade but the Rook’s armor held out for it too was of divine make. The alien was angered by this and began using the sword like a club bashing it again and again over Rook’s head. These swords were the source of power that he had detected. With them he would surely have his revenge against the accursed humans.
Seraphim took flight once more upon her angelic wings and dive bombed the creature like a fighter jet streaking towards its target. Her fiery blade sliced down in an arc that was sure to cleave any mortal man’s arm from his torso. It only cut halfway through Chaos’ arm however that was enough to give the alien pause.
“How dare you!!!!” Chaos screamed.
The alien’s own healing abilities started to repair the damage immediately but Seraphim refused to give him the chance. She struck out again with Chrysaor cleaving the arm away. Chaos roared in pain and unleashed a nova blast at point blank range. It struck Seraphim full in the face searing away half of it. She dropped her sword involuntarily losing her abilities with it.
“Nooooo!” Rook screamed running over to her and covering her body with his to protect it from another incoming nova blast.
Ethan wrapped Erin’s fingers around the hilt of her sword but it was already too late the damage was done. Even the sword could not heal her now for she was already dead. Chaos laughed at the sight of these pitiful humans. His joy in exacting his revenge was great. It seemed to fuel his power with each life that was lost.
Rook took up her sword in his own hands and angelic wings burst forth from the back of his armor. He felt his strength double even though his own armor had already enhanced it tenfold. Then he turned towards Chaos and stepped forward advancing slowly at first preparing to do battle with the vile creature.
Voltage teleported the entire Avenger Corps and Darkhawks on the scene then collapsed from the strain of using his power in such a way. Captain Midnight shot forth an ebony energy burst into Chaos’ chest which seemed to unsteady the beast momentarily. Wraith joined in with his rifle as well. Even though the alien could absorb their attacks at least it kept him preoccupied.
Maiden tended to Voltage while Coyote and Arcanum charged in close. Without weapons of any kind Coyote leapt onto Chaos’s back and began pummeling the entity with his fists. Arcanum shifted his cybernetic left arm into a long blade and then sent an electrical current running through it before he stabbed it into Chaos’ right leg. Shadow Hawk was beside him then stabbing the creature’s other leg with his wrist blades.
Chaos seemed to be overwhelmed by the amount of warriors assaulting him. But then his entire body went nova and energy blasted out in all directions. Everyone close to him was thrown backwards with explosive force. Coyote’s body was vaporized instantly by the blast for he was in actual physical contact with Chaos. Arcanum managed to surround himself with a protective shield just in time to save his own life but was still thrown fifty feet into the air.
Shadow Hawk collided with a thick tree trunk shattering his spine. His legs went numb and he knew that he was now paralyzed. Raptor ran over to him desperate to make sure he was okay. But activating the scanners in her mask she realized the extent of his internal damage. All she could do for him at this point was to cradle him in her arms. He would live but he may never walk again.
The Rook’s armor absorbed the blast but the impact still threw him backwards crashing through the window of his own living room. He shook his head in frustration and charged back outside and into the fight. By this time Captain Midnight, Luminary, Shadow Boy, and Arcanum were trading blows with Chaos.
Still armed with Claoimh Solais, Chaos was even more powerful than normal. He sent blinding light out in every direction causing the heroes to shield their eyes lest permanent damage be done to their retinas. Shadow Boy managed to circle around behind the alien and struck out with his metallic staff connecting with a satisfied BAM to the back of Chaos’ head. The alien simply snarled and rotated its head 180 degrees on his neck to look Victor Heavy in the eyes. Then a blast of nova energy shot forth from the alien’s eyes and bored their way through Shadow Boy’s eyes and into his skull. His brains exploded out the back of his head and he dropped to the ground lifeless.
“What manner of fiend is this?” Rook asked aloud swinging the fiery Chrysaor in an arc above his head.
The fire blade and the light sword connected again in earth shattering force as Chaos blocked the incoming blow. Then the alien sent his own nova force into the sword trying to increase its power. Something unexpected happened next. The nova force combined with the divine light did indeed create a more powerful weapon but the next blow struck with it connected with the holy fire and the two swords merged together.
Still struggling to maintain their grips on the swords Chaos and the Rook came nose to nose as the swords fought to get free of them. Then the swords shattered into a million pieces leaving the two of them unarmed. Chaos shook his head in rage and tried to summon a nova blast to obliterate the Rook but the sword had somehow drained him of all his nova force leaving him considerably weakened.
The Rook smiled grimly at this and punched with his enhanced strength. Chaos caught the fist in his own hand and smiled in return for his superior strength was still intact. He grabbed the Rooks arm and snapped it like a twig through his divine armor. Then he yanked the man off his feet and tossed him into the sky.
As Ethan McKnight felt gravity takeover once more he began to panic. The fall must be a hundred mile at least. He prayed that his armor would protect him and waited for the inevitable end. The Rook slammed into the Earth. His divine armor took the brunt of the impact but shattered just as the swords had shattered. He was now completely weaponless. No longer the latest in a line of crusading Rooks, but now just the Count of Carrion a normal human being. __________________
