The teammates studied the damage and mourned the loss of the members who had now passed on. They were all drawn to tears but none more so than the brave and heroic Captain Midnight. The loss of his love was a devastating blow that he wasn’t sure he could recover from.
But somehow he managed to pull himself together enough to address the others “this is a dark day for the world for it has seen the passing of some great people” here he spoke the names of those heroes using their real names “Lolita, Edward James, Billy Badlands, Victor Heavy, and Erin Cross gave their lives today in an effort to defend the Earth from Chaos.”
Here he paused and still feeling the ebony energy coursing through his veins Captain Midnight unleashed a blast at the stone wall that he and Luminary had taken refuge behind earlier. As the rocks split apart he then whispered something to Arcanum and then watched silently as the other man used magic to reform the rocks into an obelisk.
Captain Midnight picked up the thirty foot tall statue and moved it over to the spot where Chaos was finally defeated and set it down. Then using a small amount of ebony energy he carved the names of the deceased near the obelisk’s base before continuing his speech.
“Let this stand in memorial to those brave souls and remind everyone of their sacrifice.”
Several hours later…
“I need to get back to the Citadel” John Dark said struggling to get out of the bed where he now rested.
“You need to stay put” Alicia said soothingly stroking his hair “Ethan said we could stay here as long as needed.”
Ethan McKnight, the Count of Carrion, walked in at that moment and addressed them both “the Avenger Corps are preparing to leave. Didn’t know if you felt like saying goodbye?”
Before either of them could answer Cole Turner walked in still wearing his Captain Midnight uniform save for the mask which was pushed back where it dangled on the back of his shirt like a hood “you fought well back there, both of you. I’m sorry that your young friend was taken in the way that he was. These losses remind me of what we are here for. We need to stand together as a united front. Therefore I’m extending an invitation for you to join my team.”
“We’ll think about it” Alicia said “but John has to recover first.”
“Of course, I didn’t mean you had to come right now. But if you need us to get you back to Saint Katherine’s Bay we can.”
“That’ be great” John said sitting up “I really need to get back.”
“But you can’t even stand much less walk” Alicia protested.
“It’s okay I can temporarily remove the pain” Seamus Flannigan said entering the room as well “just give me a moment to focus.”
With that the paranormal investigator known as Arcanum rubbed the fleshy palm of his right hand with the metallic one of his left and generated a small electrical current between them. Then he placed both hands on John’s legs and sent a jolt running down them numbing the pain.
“There you should be okay to travel now.”
“So how exactly are we going to travel?” John asked.
“Some of Voltage’s power inadvertently flowed into me upon his death. I believe I can manipulate electrical currents and teleport us back just as he did.”
“Then what are we waiting for” Corey Wraithe said as he walked in “Tabitha and I are tired of England already.”
“That’s not true” Tabitha Utterson also known as Luminary said walking in as well “but I would prefer to get back home sooner than later.”
“You sure you won’t join us Ethan?” Cole said extending his hand for the other man to shake.
“Without my armor and my sword the Rook is no more. I have let my legacy down. Thanks for the offer but I prefer to be alone with my grief for the time being at least.”
“Understood” Cole replied and nodded to Arcanum.
In a crackle of electrical energy the team was gone leaving Ethan McKnight alone to gather his thoughts. __________________
