The Hawk’s Nest, home to the resident vigilantes of Saint Katherine’s Bay who call themselves the Darkhawks, is an old clock tower near the center of town. At its base is a garage that houses two modified sport bikes known as Stalker and Raptor as well as the resident mechanic Jackson “The Jackrabbit” Hare. The middle level contains a martial arts dojo and an armory where costumes and weapons are stored and cared for under the watchful eye of weapon designer Sebastian King. And the top level contains the massive supercomputer, Birdseye, which is linked up to every satellite in orbit around Earth and monitored by famed computer hacker Alicia Martin.
The more John Dark thought about the tower the more amazed he was by everything that had been accomplished. The city crime rate has dropped by 32%. It wasn’t much of an improvement but it was better than nothing. At least now most thugs either fled or surrendered at the first sight of Foreshadow and Talon. The only ones who still seemed to put up much of a fight were the ones with mob ties or superpowers. The latter being the only ones with a real chance against the vigilantes.
“Hey Sebastian what do you got for me?” John asked entering the armory.
“I’ve actually got something you might really like” the weapons designer said excitedly “a UAV I’ve cooked up with help from Alicia. I call it the Cyberhawk.”
Sebastian King pulled a sheet off of his workbench to reveal what appeared to be an actual size predatory bird made of metal. He lifted it off the table to show off its light weight and then pointed out a couple of things John missed on first glance.
“You see the tips of the claws? They are actually miniature rockets that can be used as countermeasures for any anti-air defenses the UAV might encounter. The eyes house small video recorders and the beak hides a microphone.”
“Why not just use the satellites we’re linked up to?”
“Because those only give you aerial views, the Cyberhawk can actually perch near windows and spy inside buildings.”
“Now that would be helpful” John says “I’d like to have some eyes and ears inside some of these warehouses before I go charging in after the scum.”
“Exactly” Sebastian said “now how about trying this thing out tonight?”
“You think it’s ready for field testing?” asked John.
“So what’s going on tonight?”
“Hey Victor” Sebastian greeted “what’s the word.”
“The Russian’s are planning something big” Victor Heavy blurted out.
“Planning what?”
“I’m not sure John but I do know that two of their higher ups are meeting at the Excalibur right now.”
This definitely peaked John’s interest “who?”
“Profky Lebedev and Maksim Kozlov.”
“Big Frankie and Mighty Max, are you sure?”
“The very same” Victor confirmed.
“Sebastian ready the Cyberhawk” John said “I think this is the perfect opportunity for a test run. And Victor get back down there, if they leave I’m going to need you trailing them long enough for Alicia to get the Birdseye locked onto them.”
