sin city: family values
3.5 stars (out of 5)
another gruesome installment to frank miller's series that follows Dwight (from the big fat kill and a dame to kill for)
and miho(also from the bfk). dwight goes to a bar and sets up an intricate scheme where he plays the damsel in distress, only to put miho into place to take out a big business man who incidentally killed a bystander who's girlfriend got mad hence the hiring of dwight and niho.  dwight is only rweally in it to get the car, and does, so it was really one of the lighter sin city stories that can be read in one setting. 1 to 2 hours that is. i just read it in the store and didnt know who the characters were at the time.  it's gorey and well...if youve seen then movie you get it.

dark knight strikes again. part 1&2 of 3.
dont read this without reading dark knight returns before hand.  i'm niot impressed, and very confused, most of the art seems too cartoonish, and there are pages of people arguing about the return of batman, etc. batman beats the heck out of supes who despises batman and vise versa.  lex luthor is controlling wonder woman, supes, and shazam by threatening killing off the kryptonian species(currently contained in a jar by brainiac. its in the future and supes is bangin wonder woman, so i am totally lost. and the amount of times he uses the "D" word is insane.  he took sin city and applied it to dc, and i dont like it. 2.5 (of 5)so far, but things may improve in the final issue.

(batsy finished beating up supes using his machines and iron fists, and when supes takes it and pleads he just wants to talk, batsy smacks him again and says, "i'm done talking.")

What kind of story is this? If it's in the future shouldn't Superman be married to Lois still?
Posted:  14 May 2006 15:38
thats what i dont get. she was still alive because he sees her necklace in the metrpolis rubble and is all sad. maybe it was written beforer the marriage, but even so, why the heck is trhis so accredited?[smirk]

great reviews  super dude you really got me interested in that dark knight srikes again stories
Posted:  16 May 2006 21:37
heh heh. i finished it. it ahd an ok an ending, but again, it focused a lot on finding the old heroes in odd places, for instance the atom trapped in a petri dish, green lantern hiding in his ring, etc.  supes makes up with batsy sort of, but i dont like how an old character is turned into a physco killer.  i wont say who for floyds sake.
the art was definitely a different view of the heroes though.3.5 out of 5

not manby pics oput there. written by bendis. not an action book. its marvels max line for adult readers. jessica jones (about to marry luke cage in new avengers but this is before that) runs her own inverstigative company where sehes the only person. she usually just hunts down cheaters. but in this case she accidentaly tapes cap's secret identity and thats where it takes off. it has hints about the luke cage thing, but is a little overrated. i didnt find it all that great, its kinda like (in the words of some marvel dude) the underbelly of the marvel U. the smeinormal persons life with heroes and sucky powers.
adult read.
rated "R" for comics.
more cussing than sin city but not gorery.

doesn't sound like much of a comic book story.

I'm not really crazy about cussing either except when I stub my toe on the way to the bathroom in the middle of the night.
Posted:  19 May 2006 15:58
i used to cuss but ive changed my values a bit.
Posted:  19 May 2006 17:09
yeah, it wasnt anything special[smirk]

Well the thing is in high school you hear cussing all the time, but when you grow up it becomes much less socially acceptable. It's one of those things I catch myself doing when something on my computer doesn't work or when I play basketball at the park. I get so hyped up I forget what I am doing. It's embarrassing now to cuss in public where as in high school you were deemed a loser if you didn't.

Of course it's a been quite a while since the high school days but bad habits die hard.

cant remember which issues but i think it was one of the first ones with bendis and maleev.
any way. it starts out with the death of kingpin. atleast we think so. n from that point on it uses time intervals like two weeks ago, two months ago etc. to lead up to the event. meanwhile, this mysteriousw mob dude that "killed kingpin" puts a bounty on matts head.
you think you've seen daredevil pissed off before. read this.
a paticularly awesome moment is when this one hitman scowls at daredevil from across a building, but when dd looks in the eyes of the hitman, he looks like he wet himself and runs away. tries to atleast.
this also has a flashback to punisher sort of. when kingpins wife finds out her som was involved. she whoops up on him and his whole mob. as she guns down her son you can see to skulls in her eyes. it was overall pretty tight, and the more i talk about it the more i like it.
also has an ending with a certain mobster revealing matt's identity. it's good stuff.
8.7 out of 10

ultimate ff (president thor parts 1-3...or4)
i've read all of the ultimate ff's so far and have to say this is probably the best story arc yet. it takes place where ben is really down about the whole "thing" thing (no pun intended) so reed finally decides to take them back in time and fix the problem with his machine that accidentaly turned them into the ff. it works and a year or so later they're good friends with the skrull who've given them a pill that gives people immunity to diseases AND the luxury of superpowers. in a year the whole planet has taken it with the exception of ben. he's the last normal human on earth. skrull comes back and reed finds out that thy're pill is gonna kill them in about an hour. they try to stop skrull but he has a suit that absorbs the powers around him. skrull counts down the population in front of ben, til finally he's the last person on earth. ben starts laughing.  he points out that skrulls suit absorbs the powers around him, but since everybody's dead. "IT'S CLOBBERIN' TIME!!!" ben runs to the time machine and sends himself back to that fateful day when ff were spawned and ironically ends up being the one screwing up the machine that turns the original him and the others into the ff.
back in present time. ben is still moaning when crying at a bench in the park, he meets a certain alicia masters. "i'm blind."
ben--"thank god!"
great. sorry i sorta ruined the ending but you should read it anyway. it was awesome. 9.7 out of 10
and has anyone else noticed that whenever in a comic ben is sad, alicia just happens to show up?

batman year one
reda this one a couple months ago, got it from the library. turns out it was the graphic novel.  it was an 80's comic by miller, but not drawn by him. great story great art. the graphic novel was repainted rather than using the original color above. i'm sure this helped a lot because the color was superb.
anyway, thisretold the origin of batman, but kept close. it tells the story's of jim gordon and bruce wayne. just when i was thinking it would be cool to here a story from someone like gordon's view this made him as interesting as batman.  gotham is dirtier than ever, but batman comes out and teams with gordon to fix that. not miller's style, but the best of his i've ever read. you'll also notice that parts of this were taken directly into the batman begins flic, and there's even talk of a movie directly off of this, but i doubt it because of  batman begins already being out there and using a lot of this stuff. it was excellent, believable, and nicely splayed out over a year. read it.

it also had a bit of catwoman's beginning for a little humaor as she watches tv and sees batman get the credit for a little of her thievery. but this nicely built the relationship between gordon and batman. and miller's exaggerrated style of art would've ruined it i think. it was a realistic look at batsy.  it also seemed to give him more time to write.

Superdude I created a section off of comic book reviews just for your reviews. That way you can title each one with the name of the comic book you review.

One thing I have to ask I have been wondering. Is there any explanation in the Marvel Universe for the Ultimate Universe? Have the Ultimates ever saw their counterparts? Are we just supposed to go with it?
Posted:  21 May 2006 13:04
mostly go with it, but there was a crossover in ultimate fantastic four, issues 21-23
i'm always surprised to find that 22 is worth about $24 when all other issues of the series are in the $2-$4 area. so your best bet on getting cheap hands on these is to get the garphic novel.  the whole crossover turns into a sort of zombie thing, but it was pretty cool.

So do you mean the ultimates ended up finding out their counterparts were zombies instead the real Fantastic Four?
Posted:  23 May 2006 19:57
yeah it was a twisted zombie world were heroes were looking for more people to eat, and ultimate reed teamed with magneto to get away.  the ff zombies are currently in the ultimate ff's lab threatening that they can get out whenever they want.  they even made a zombie series due to its success, that why the issue cost so much. first appearence of marvelo zombies[smirk]

no way, the plot sounds like a cheap horror film.
Posted:  25 May 2006 19:03
well;, that does seem to be the current basis of the ff. which i think detracts from the ff.

Do you ever watch the sci-fi channel? Seems like all they show are zombie monster killer stuff. There is always plenty of action but no real story. There's never any science in the science fiction shows. It lacks the intelligence of the old Twilight Zone shows.

Except for the occassional really cool mini series like Triangle. Worse I read they are planning on bringing a wrestling show to the channel. On a sci-fi channel for crying out loud! I wish they had a thinking man's sci-fi channel.
Posted:  25 May 2006 22:01
wrestling is perhaps the dumbest form of television available to man. it's up there with teletubbies.

Yeah it was ok when I was a kid and Hulk Hogan was out there wrestling with appearances of Mr. T, but it's about like watching Sesame Street now. Just too old to care about the junk besides the sci-fi channel needs to bring in some half way intelligent entertainment. There just isn't anything on that requires any sort of thought anymore.
