The Maverick Men in Black Pearl Part Four (The Darkness) by Wayne Clayton
In the heat of the desert Travis and the rest of the Mavericks looked at the young G.I. in amazement, Barry's long boney digit carelessly probed the hole were the 35mm shell had gone through the boy. The glint of daylight peeking in from the other side.
"So what are you? A Zombie or something ??" teased Calder.
" They don't know?" Mort said rather apologetically. "It just keeps happening. I don't mean it too, honest. I wish it wouldn't, I..I wanna but I can't"
"Ah.. don't sweat it kid, we all got somethin' that's why were Mavericks"
"Okay men give the boy a break and lets get the hell out of here. We got what we came for, what ever it is? So lets stick a bow on it and send it back home to Roosevelt"
" Barry, you can drive, I'm sure Fritz won't mind, Stone,Clearwater inside and take the eightball ball with ya "
" Hey Clearwater heads up!! " Calder grinned as he tossed the Black Pearl up into the air.
" Whoa!! Are you crazy that thing must weigh a ton...hey what gives???!!"
" I don't know, once we got up top it got lighter. Guess it don't like Sunlight or somethin'?"
" Well that's just plain stupid, just like you Spinach Boy"
A second later Clearwaters head ducked out of sight as he slipped down into the black hole of the tank hatch. Closely followed by a yelp as something big, round and suddenly quite heavy landed on his foot.
"SON OF A ....!! CALDER!!!"
With the sound of playful laughter ringing in his ears Barry fired up the engine of the captured Lynx tank and it roared into life. Sending a cloud of thick black smoke into the air. Travis perched in the Commanders hatch. Leaving Calder and Mort riding shotgun and waving goodbye to the Germans struggling against their bonds. It would be sometime till they would manage to free themselves but that didn't matter. With their radio smashed and the tank tracks missing lynch pin buried in the sand somewhere they'd have plenty of time to think of what to tell the Fuhrer about what had happened to his paper weight. No doubt he'd be very understanding about it.
The End..?
Well only time will tell what happened to the 'Black Pearl' once it reached the desk of the President As for Captain Travis and the rest of his Maverick Men their adventures would be kept safely under lock and key deep within the bowels of a certain Hoover Dam under the watchful gaze of one General V. Layton. Who is General V. Layton? Well I suggest you go off and read Johnny Reb and The Maverick Men in 'The Clockwork Atoll' swiftly followed by the adventures of Big Blue.
