I just got a chance to watch Batman:Year One animated movie. It was pretty good actually. It would make a great movie, but I was surprised at all the cussing for a cartoon. Don't get it for your kids.

Anyways I noticed that everything seemed to be telling me this was taking place in the late 70's or early 80's. There was an old fashioned rotary dial phone, white wall tires, all the cars looked like big 70's cars, and of all things there was a sign that said VHS and Betas for rent. I like the detail they put in to give it that feeling of yesteryear.

But if that was Batman's first year why he'd fighting crime in his 50's or 60's now. Batman ain't that old is he? So just what year was Batman:Year One supposed to take place in?

It's probably because it's supposed to be a straight adaptation of the comic, which was released in the 90s.  Batman's always said to have started his career "about 10 years ago", so that would mean the comic took place in the 80s.  It's just to make it authentic to the source, more than anything (but I didn't really notice, so maybe it could have been set in the 2000s and it wouldn't have made much difference).

Probably did do that from that time to be just like the comic. It did give it a totally different feel. It almost felt more crime ridden and gritty being from that time period.

The further back a story takes place, the easier it seems to be able to see it as having a crime-ridden place.
