“Welcome to SHADOW Company” Colonel Luther Vanguard addresses his team “here at the Nexus you will eat, sleep, exercise, train, and congregate. There is nothing in the outside world that you cannot get here. So you will not leave this compound without permission. Do you understand?”
As one the entire group replied “Sir Yes Sir!”
“Good” the Colonel allowed himself a smile “think of each other as family. We will be there for one another in times of need. We will have each other’s backs here and out there” he pointed upwards towards the ceiling to encompass the outside world as this facility was ten miles beneath the Earth’s surface “during missions you will listen to commands and execute your orders without hesitation.”
The briefing continued on for another half an hour. Then Luther Vanguard introduced the chain of command and the Research & Development division. Once everything he intended to do was finished he dismissed the soldiers. Then he motioned for the core team to follow him.
“Those Geckos are remarkable” Sebastian Crowe was commenting to Dr. Landon “it’s amazing what you created.”
Tabitha Landon smiled at the compliment “it wasn’t all me though. If it weren’t for the Jackal formula I never would have been able to do it.”
She referred to Doctor Hank Jackal who had created a formula which drew out mankind’s darker, more animalistic nature giving said individual superior power. The formula Dr. Jackal tested out on himself releasing the malevolent Edwin Hydra who stalked the neighborhood of White Chapel in London killing prostitutes back in the late 1800s. This led to the manhunt for the murderer that newspapers called Jack the Ripper. The formula was smuggled out of the country by one of Jackal’s colleagues which was Tabitha’s ancestor. Once she had become a bio-geneticist she was able to adapt the formula getting rid of the ill effects and harnessing the true potential of the compound creating the Genetically Enhanced Combat Killer Organisms that Vanguard had nicknamed Geckos.
“Alright enough praise. I want to know what everybody really thought of the Geckos. Do you think they’ll perform well enough for us to utilize them as full soldiers of SHADOW Company?”
“They look capable enough” Sergeant Andrews decided “but I don’t want to pass judgment until I see them in the training room.”
“Agreed” said Edward Jones “I think we should put them through their paces and then make the final call.”
Sebastian shook his head “I’d like to get them on the range to test out some of my weapons as well. See how good their motor skills are. I believe they are exceptional and stand by my earlier comments but we can’t be too careful.”
Remus Vel’Kar grimaced “I don’t like the idea of having these freaks back us up during a real fight. What if their faculties break down during combat? If their mental capacity becomes compromised then how do we expect them to carry out orders?”
“You’re a freak and we still like having you around” Jackson Hare commented on Vel’Kar’s alien heritage “besides we’ll never know until we give them a chance.”
Remus snarled at Jackson but otherwise didn’t comment on the jibe. That’s when Damian Cross came over to stand beside him “he’s right though. Regardless of how many trials we put them through we will never know if they could breakdown in the middle of a firefight.”
“We could all just as easily breakdown during a firefight” Jackson Hare replied “we’re all vulnerable to fear or stress or any other condition that could likely give us pause at a crucial moment. What makes us any different?”
“We were born not created in a lab” Damian replied.
“No we weren’t” Richard Burke chimed in “however most of us still don’t understand the true nature of our abilities. We gained them purely by accident…well most of us…so who’s to say something doesn’t go wrong with us on the battlefield?”
“Enough” Col Vanguard decides “we’ll just have to send them out on a test run and see how they perform. I have an isolated mission with zero potential for civilian casualties that just came down from Washington. This has to remain under the radar for political reasons.”
“Where are we going Colonel?” Sergeant Andrews asks “don’t tell me the Middle East?”
Luther shakes his head in the negative “not this time Sergeant. South America has become the new hotspot. It seems the Foreign Liberation Activist Group is going through a regime change causing violent outbreaks within their ranks. These occurrences have spilled over into villages across Brazil. We need to cut this hydra’s head off once and for all.”
“Alright so who’s going?” Corey Andrews asks “or do I get to decide?”
“The team has already been decided by me” the Colonel answers “you’ll take Luminary, Jackrabbit, and Osprey with you. And no protests, the doctor will go with you because if something goes wrong with the GECKOs she’s the only one who’ll be able to do anything about it.”
“What about the rest of us?” Edward demands “I want to see some action too.”
Richard Burke nods “as do I.”
Before Remus Vel’Kar could complain as well Col Vanguard lifted his hands “Voltage and Chronos will be helping Wrench with another project. Vortex you will get to ferry the team to Brazil because we cannot risk being detected trying to enter any other way.” __________________
