Chapter 2; Expedition
------------------------------
Michael had just come home from school and was really feeling under the weather. He had just turned 13 and hadn't felt quite right since that day, more out-casted...
Mom: How was school?
Michael: Fine.
Mom: You sound tired, rough day?
Michael: Yeah, rough day. I don't feel so good I'm going to go lay down for a bit.
Mom: Don't fall asleep for too long, you'll need to rest tonight for tomorrow. Remember? Ron & Philip are coming over and you're headed for the New York in the morning. Are you sure you're going to be ok?
Michael: Yeah, just need to rest my head for a little bit.
Hours pass, and as Michael sleeps, a strange electrical wave is emitted from his body. Invisible to the naked eye, static begins to charge up in his room and around him as his cloths, cloth materials, and metal objects are slowly drawn to him while he sleeps. He wakes up to find part of his room had caved in on him. Startled but not dumb enough to attract attention, he puts everything back, but not without difficulty. 'Weird' he thinks to himself. As he goes to open the door, Michael gets shocked by the metal doorknob but doesn't pull back. It felt somewhat refreshing to him, and that gave him something to think about besides the sound of Philip eating pancakes downstairs. He hurriedly gets dressed, grabs the suitcase of cloths and the bag of 'Stuff to do' that he had prepared the night before and leaps down stairs with ease.
Philip: Morning Mike. (By this time, Michael had switched his name from Michael to Mike, socially at least.)
Mike: Morn'. Ready for the trip? I hope we get a good plane.
Ron: Yeah, one without babies everywhere you look who happen to throw up on the seat next to you.
(They laugh)
After breakfast, consisting of steak, eggs, pancakes, and sausage, the kids say good-bye to their parents and Mike's dad takes off with all of them to the airport. When they get there, they see the lines and are glad to have ordered the tickets online. After passing security, and Mike saying bye to his dad, they settle down on a row of seats next to the gate.
Mike: Ok, we have about half an hour before the plane arrives, who wants Starbucks?
Ron: Hellz yes.
Mike: Philip can you watch the stuff?
Philip: No problem. (He's deep into his DS)
Ron and Mike head across the hallway to Starbucks, they order their favorites, and come back. Ron starts reading a book while Mike opens up his laptop. Half an hour goes by and the plane arrives, since they are in 'A' seating, they get to board first. On board, the group watches the movie Daredevil for about half the flight, after the movie we get drinks and snacks, and I battle Philip on the DS and Ron at cards. They arrive in New York were Mike's cousin is waiting, with a limo.
Mike: Hey Rob, how's it going?
Rob: Good, and you?
Mike: Flight was tiring, but ok. Oh, this is Ron and Philip, the two friends I told you about. This is Rob, he has starred in a few movies.
Rob: Right, how's it going you two?
Ron & Philip: Good. Great.
Mike: So why a limo?
Rob: Just something I thought you three would enjoy for the first part of your vacation.
Philip: Score!
Rob: Haha, hop on in; we'll head to the hotel so you can set up base.
The group hardly notices that they're in traffic almost the whole time as they check out the limo. Couches, TV's, game systems, and so much more is equipped in the car. For about a quarter of an hour they fooled around, and tinkered with different things when they finally got to the hotel. The group unpacked the car and carried the stuff to the room on the top floor. Rob had reserved a triple, the entry door led to a hallway with a bathroom & shower on the side, which led to the kitchen & family room area with a sliding glass door separating it from a patio with a glass table. From the family room, 2 hallways each with a bathroom on the side led to smaller bedroom areas.
Mike: I'll take the couch bed; you two take the bedrooms--
Philip: Dibs on the right one. I'll go get some Ice for our drinks.
Ron: No need. We have a fridge.
Philip: Oh. Oops.
As they set up camp, unpacking their things into the drawers and putting the food away, Mike opened up the sliding glass door and walked out on to the balcony. To his left was a semi-busy street, but from the middle to the right was a nice quite park, with a pool, spa, and swim-up bar for all ages.
Mike: After dinner guys, you wanna take a swim for about an hour before bed? I'm sore and tired from the trip, and a swim is just what I need.
Ron: Yeah alright. But we should find out what we're having for dinner first.
Philip: There's an Italian restraunt around the corner from the hotel, I saw on the way here.
Ron: Sounds good to me.
They headed to the elevator and went down to meet the chauffer waiting with the limo who took them to the restraunt along with recommending other various places as well. All through dinner the group talked about what they wanted to see, what things they should do there, and more. On the way back to the hotel, Mike noticed something was different...
Ron: You ok? You're kind of quite.
Mike: It's just I feel a little awkward, probably something I ate, that or the flight took more out of me than I thought.
Mike wasn't entirely truthful, he knew the food was not the problem and that a swim would help the jet-lag he was experiencing. It was the fact that his body felt tingly all over that scared him. When they got back to the hotel, they got changed and went down to the pool.
Mike: Last one in gets last pick what we do tomorrow! (As they all start running, Mike stops dead in his tracks.)
Philip: Mike?
Mike falls straight into the water as Ron and Philip both jump in after him. They drag him out on to the side, asking if he's ok or not.
Mike: Yeah I'm fine. What the hell was that?
Philip: You ran to the side of the pool, then stood straight up as if you were shocked with some--
Mike: Shocked? (Rubbing his face)
Ron: Yeah, what happened?
Mike: I don't know. Listen I'm just going to go sit in the spa. I'll be up in about 15 minutes.
Philip: You sure you'll be ok?
Mike: Yeah, I'll be fine.
Ron: Ok, see ya in the room.
The two jump off into the pool and swim up to the bar. Mike heads toward the spa and get's in. The spa is very hot and against the cold New York air it makes a think steam. After about 5 minutes, Mike notices a figure standing above the spa at the other end out of the corner of his eye.
Mike: Hi, I didn't see you there, how long have you been here?
Man: Not long...
Mike: Do I know you? (No response, Mike squints and now realizes who is across from him.) You're the guy from the hospital?!
Man: It's begun.
Mike: What's beg--before you vanish off I have one question.
Man: ...
Mike: You said you were a guide, a guide for what?
Man: Destiny. (He vanishes with the haze...again.)
Mike sits back and replays those words over and over again in his head with the ones heard last time in the hospital. He suddenly realizes how tired he is and how dark it is outside, Ron & Philip probably went back up to the room by now Mike recalls as he gets out. He dries himself off and heads back up to the room, Ron and Philip had already gone to bed. Mike hesitates for a moment thinking about the slip in the pool earlier and wonders if it had anything to do with what that man had been talking about. He decides it's too late to think about it as he's getting ready for bed. Then he notices a dark face in the window as he's closing the blinds, he turns around startled and sees no one is there. 'I'm more tired than I thought' Mike thinks as he closes the blinds, turns off the light and goes to sleep. __________________
