Yup, I got bored so I decided to post another chapter early.
------------------------------
Chapter 9; Acidic
------------------------------
The moon is full over Aero-Labs, a high tech facility at the north end of Manhattan. Most of the scientists have gone home, but William and Ted, two highly respected scientists are working late.
William: Ted, it's getting pretty late and we have that meeting tomorrow in front of the board committee before lunch.
Ted: Oh boy, we do don't we. Alright, head on out I'll clean up in here. (A security guard walks by)
Guard: Everything ok in here?
William: Yes, we're almost done.
Guard: What have you guys been working on in here? You've stayed pretty late the last few nights.
Ted: Guess we have, it's easy for geeks like us to get caught up in all this fun stuff. (They laugh) We've actually been looking at different types of acids and how they affect different elements.
William: Ted.
Ted: Right, here, put the sample of acid next to the tritium sample and hydrochloric acids.
William puts the sample down in a vending machine-sized container as the guard and Ted walk out. William pulls his arm out and accidentally knocks the tritium into the outlet on the side causing the case to explode spraying acid all over William. He falls over screaming in agony, as his face starts to smoke. The guard and Ted run back in to see what happened. 'Will!' Ted yells as he runs to his side placing one hand on his arm, it instantly melts. The security guard looks on in horror unsure what to do; the two scientists continue to melt along with everything in the room. The liquid of the leftover scientists oddly melts the fallen tritium and moves close to the wall outlet. The security guard narrowly escapes the laboratory as it bursts in a multitude of different colored smoke and flames.
Minutes later the entire laboratory is crossed off in caution tape, police cars are visible all over the site. Mike arrives on scene to see if he can help; and the captain appoints him to stay with the guard until they could get through the door. The entire laboratory goes into lockdown whenever there's a leak or contamination of some sort. It's a fail-safe to make sure no loose chemicals are accidentally released, endangering public safety.
Mike: We're you in there before the explosion?
Guard: Yes, (he said shaken up) I was locking up when I saw 2 scientists still in there.
Mike: Where are they?
Guard: (Staying silent for a second) They didn't make it.
Mike: Please, (sensing he wasn't entirely truthful) what happened?
Guard: (He looks over at the other officers then looks back) The two scientists' names were William and Ted. They were working with acids I think and there was this explosion, not the big one. William started to--melt and when Ted ran over to him and touched his side, he started to melt--they were a glowing puddle with--blood everywhere--chunks. (He starts to break up) I only knew them for a few days, but they were good guys.
Mike: I'm sorry. (They stand in silence looking at the officers of a few minutes) How did the big explosion happen?
Guard: When they were melted with a multitude of other chemicals, they dripped into a socket causing the complex to go off.
Just then the door is torn of its hinges, they broke through. 'Clear!' one of the officers yells, and a few of them head in and search, they're out of sight for a while then come back to the door, 'Sir, you'd better come back and see this. 'Dave, stay with the guard, Mike come with me.' the Captain orders. We head inside, fuses are broken and sparking, lights are dimmed and there's an eerie sense of discomfort in the air. We come to the room that the guard mentioned, burnt in the ground is a hole, about 8 feet wide.
Police Captain: Holy... what happened here?
Officer: Where did this hole come from?
Mike bends down to look at the edge of the hole; a small sample of the acid was left behind. He goes and gets a test tube from one of the Crime Lab officers as well as a super strong base solution in order to counter act the acid. He rubs the solution around into the tube, and carefully pours in the acid which instantly melts the metal wiring he used. Mike heads over to the Crime Lab officers.
Mike: Here guys, careful with this stuff, I think it's what burnt through the ground.
Ricky: Thanks Mike, we'll look into it.
Mike: Also, could you let me know if you find anything? I'd like to look into this one a little more.
Ricky: Sure, no problem.
As they walk off, Mike takes a quick look around the lab. Not finding anything else, he decides to head back to the station. When he arrives he heads up to the roof, and in a quick flash of light, he changes into Lectrohm and flies of towards Aero-Labs.
Ohm: Captain, what happened here?
Police Captain: I was hoping you could tell me. We found this hole in the ground, looks like it's been burnt.
Ohm: What was being worked on in here?
Police Captain: Some sort of experiments would be my guess. We're not sure how far down the hole goes, or even if it's safe for my boys to do so... (Ohm Smiles)
Ohm: All you had to do was ask.
Ohm begins to glow as an electrical energy envelops him, protecting him from and harm as he dives into the hole. For a few minutes he dives straight down, he then arrives at circular room in which he scans the room for and signs of something unusual. He spots a small cave on the side of the room and enters. He follows the path as it slowly climbs up towards the surface. Ohm pops up on the outskirts of New York. 'Escaped' Ohm thinks. He flies up looking for any sign of him, a trail, a residue, anything. No such luck, he heads back towards the city... __________________
