From Yahoo News -

Rodriguez back to future with "Jetsons" movie

"Grindhouse" might have taken a drubbing at the box office, but director Robert Rodriguez is very much in demand.

He is in talks to direct a live-action feature version of futuristic 1960s cartoon "The Jetsons" for Warner Bros.

At the same time, he has met with Will Ferrell and Universal executives for helming duties on "Land of the Lost," based on the 1970s Sid and Marty Krofft fantasy TV series to which Ferrell is attached to star.

While no offers have been made, sources say "Jetsons" has the edge because its script is farther along. One possible hurdle the studios will have to contend with is Rodriguez and the Directors Guild of America.

Rodriguez left the union in March 2004 when it refused his request to share the director's credit with Frank Miller on "Sin City." Rodriguez could direct a studio movie if he declared himself under "financial core" status with the DGA, paying partial dues but remaining a nonmember.

Rodriguez was most recently in theaters with the "Planet Terror" portion of "Grindhouse," a double feature with Quentin Tarantino. The film earned about $24 million at the domestic box office in North America.

"The Jetsons" was previously brought to the big screen in 1990 as an animated film.

wow, I have a lot more respect for rodriguez now.  him leaving the directors guild is right after they didn't want to give frank miller co-directing credits.  i've seen the special features of sin city and he really had to pull to get frank miller involved and asked if he could make the film, so it's all in stride for him to fight for miller.  i thinks that's the right thing to do.   as far as the jetsons movie, i'm surprised one director can direct sin city and grindhouse one minute, then the next be directing spy kids and the jetsons.

Yeah, that is surprising, but then again Sam Raimi started his career with a movie so bad and gory that it was banned in some countries namely the Evil Dead, and by the time the trilogy ended we got a real fun loving three stooges slapstick sci-fi action flick called Army of Darkness and of course the very family friendly Spider-Man movies.

I really want to see the Land of the Lost, I've got the whole series on DVD I hope it's sort of a continuation that maybe finally answers some questions about the Land of the Lost instead of just rehashing the very beginning although it might be nice to have a little background on the main characters.

well, if will ferrell's in it, you can say good bye to any script that respects the story line.
and good comparison about sam raimi, very relevent wiht the recent topic post and the new spidey 3 movie.

You know I had to reread that, I was thinking when I first read that story that Will Ferrell was going to play like George Jetson, which might kind of fit him, but I don't understand the idea of him playing on a Land of the Lost movie at all. I would think that movie would be more of a serious kind of sci-fi adventure not some goofy spoof. I really want to see a good story with Land of the Lost not some parody!
