Editorial Reviews:

Combat veteran and author Hans Halberstadt takes readers deeper inside the elusive world of snipers than ever before, from recruitment and training to the brutality of the killing fields.

Shadow Team is probably the most productive sniper team in American military history, accounting for 276 confirmed kills in a six months span with no casualties of their own. Their leader made what was, and may still be, the longest range kill with a 7.62mm rifle. For the first time ever they explain what it's like to kill a man and what it takes to become one of the elite.

The tragic tale of Headhunter Two is altogether different. This four man sniper team from a regiment known within the Corps as the Magnificent Bastards was killed in 2004 in Ramadi, Iraq. Their deaths not only caused a reevaluation of sniper tactics and techniques, but created a desire for vengeance that was exacted nearly two years later in dramatic fashion.

Based on hundreds of hours of exclusive interviews, Halberstadt gets inside the sniper mind and shows how they think and interact with each other, how missions are planned and executed, how the weapons work, and even what happens when a bullet finally strikes its target. There are only a few hundred snipers from all the services put together in combat at any one time, making this true inside story a rare and important event.

Both a uniquely intimate look at what makes a sniper tick and a harrowing read filled with dramatic war tales, Trigger Men is a book about killers and killing, without apology and without remorse.

Summary: The only thing you feel is the recoil !!!
Comment: Excellent book on what it was like to be a sniper in early Gulf War 2 and what our people in country are dealing with. Covers a lot of aspects of sniping never before seen or read about (and I have read quite a few books on the issue), and the mentality involved with them. Five stars - you will learn a lot.

Summary: Snipers don't like to lose.
Comment: The book is not a definitive work on sniping ( there's other texts for that) or even on sniping in the global war on terrorism. Nonetheless is an overall very nice book and contains some amazing war stories. The dedication, courage and especially resorcefulness of these american snipers are nothing but commendable. Anybody who tends to think the american war machine is sleepy and dumb should read it to discover how U.S. soldiers like to fight to win and are, to that purpose, able to innovate tactics and perfection techniques when left on their own.

Summary: A Good Read
Comment: A very good book of this type. Easy to read with good stats but not overwhelming details. Good story sources.

Summary: Good Balance of Stories vs. Background and Technical Details, needs more gore and terminal ballistics
Comment: I was looking for a book that had real-life stories of snipers in action, all from a fairly recent viewpoint (the war in Iraq and Afghanistan). This book fit the bill. While the author felt obligated to throw in the usual background info, how they are selected, how they train, ect., this was not as dull as I had expected, and in the parts about ballistics, weapons, and equipment, actually turned out to be fairly educational. It was amazing to read that the M-16 is actually considered a valid and highly effective sniper weapon now when used with a heavier barrel, decent sight, and 77 grain bullet that drops insurgents with the first shot (no more going straight through with no kill). The only drawbacks -- not nearly enough on Afghanistan, and despite the lengthy teaser about how the book was going to be gory, the kills themselves were fairly sugar-coated or censored. There was a little blurb on terminal ballistics, but not nearly enough, despite the intro that insinuated there would be. Still, great book, worth the money, and a fairly quick and educational read. This is the cutting edge on sniper ops in today's military in the war zone.

Summary: Good read
Comment: I really enjoyed this book. The background and overall reveal of the sniper and their training was interesting, and the firsthand accounts really brought the book to life. I was in Iraq in '05 and could picture some of the roads and landmarks. Good read for shooting aficionados or those who like real stories of combat.
