Editorial Reviews:

Biochemist Ted Sallis and his team are on a mission: To recreate the serum that spawned the world's first super-soldier. But like the swamp itself, there are dangers lurking beneath the surface. Ted's partner Eric, his girlfriend Ellen, the government, terrorists - everyone wants what Ted has, but what Ted doesn't realize is that the swamp itself may want him! A radical re-imagining of the Man-Thing's origin begins here, in a horror-tinged tale narrated by Digger, keeper of the Tower of Shadows! Dead of Night Featuring Man-Thing #1-4

Summary: A Real Missed Opportunity
Comment: DEAD OF NIGHT FEATURING THE MAN-THING is kind of an odd duck....On the one hand, it shows Marvel Comics attempting to enter the more "Adult" Horror-Fiction world that DC Comics has already staked out with it's Vertigo line of books. On the other hand, it shows why they'll probably never succeed as well as DC/Vertigo has.......

Penned by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who is doing a tremendous job with Marvel's adaptation of Stephen King's THE STAND, the book is a fairly standard retelling of The Man-Thing's origin, with one minor twist that I won't spoil, even though it's obvious from the start of the book, and is revealed about three pages later. The art is, for the most part, hideously rendered, looking like some of Marvel's sloppier 1980's/1990's output. (The final chapter, illustrated by Nic Klein, and the "Digger" sequences, illustrated by Nick Percival, are the exceptions...The whole book should have been illustrated this way.) To this longtime comic book reader, Man-Thing has always been a part of the elite caste of "Untouchable" characters, including The Sub-Mariner, Aquaman, The New Gods, and a few others, that almost NO ONE can tell a compelling story about. Sadly, as far as Man-Thing is concerned, the trend continues........

Summary: Tales of the Man-Thing
Comment: One of Marvel's most misused characters, the Man-Thing gets the mature themed MAX treatment with Dead of Night. Dead of Night is a more of a tribute to the classic EC horror comics of old and Tales From the Crypt more than anything else, and each issue features an intro and outro from the Cryptkeeper-esque Digger who offers up bad puns and unfunny jokes to boot. Man-Thing himself gets a more modernized origin as scientist Ted Sallis gets transformed into the monster that can burn those who fear him, and throughout this mini-series we witness the Man-Thing crossing paths with mutants, A.I.M. soldiers, and witchy seductress Jennifer Kale. Writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Sensational Spider-Man, Marvel Knights 4, Nightcrawler) manages to provide some of the goods here, but his MAX themed treatment of Man-Thing just seems like the guy is holding back a little (even though there are moments of blood-letting). Considering just how far some of the more recent MAX mini's have been pushing the envelope, Dead of Night just feels a little tame. There's a variety of artists working here, including Kano, Brian Denham, Nic Klein, and longtime Ghost Rider penciler Javier Saltares with inks from industry vet Tom Palmer; all of whom do mostly solid work. Nick Percival provides the wonderfully rendered Digger sequences that bookend each issue collected here as well. All in all, Dead of Night Featuring The Man-Thing is a quick and mostly entertaining read, but fans that are hoping for a no-holds-barred, blood drenched take on Marvel's swamp monster will be a bit disappointed here.

Summary: Good classic horror with a modern egde
Comment: This is a nice, classic homage to the EC comics of old, given an gritty modern twist by including Marvel's Man-Thing character. All four issues are here with strong links between the separate stories.
Of particular note, is artist Nick Percival and his wonderful spooky painted bridging sequences with the 'crypt keeper' style character, Digger. All in all a good quick read with great art!
