Back to the Future is probably one of the most popular time
travel movies of all time, and one might say it's what gave me the
idea that a time traveling superhero might not only be thought
provoking, but a lot of fun as well. Truthfully Back to the
Future starring Michael J. Fox, and Christopher Lloyd isn't really a
super sci-fi thinking braniac type of movie. It's just a lot of fun,
and really well done. It's more of a character piece than anything.
Through out the trilogy you really relate to the characters Dr.
Emmett Brown and Marty McFly, and you really hate Bif the bully.
It's a simple tale of a kooky scientist who invents a time machine
that his teenage friend ends up driving to avoid terrorists and
winds up temporarily stuck in the 1950's. Marty almost destroys his
future by preventing his own parents from getting together, but in
the end saves the day and the present becomes a much better place
for Marty and his entire family. A very Reaganesque optimistic view
of life from the 1980's you have to love.
With Back to the Future III they
end the trilogy on yet another upbeat moment that really inspires
and makes it impossible not to smile.
Jennifer Parker: Dr. Brown, I brought this note back from the
future and now it's erased.
Doc: Of course it's erased.
Jennifer Parker: But what does that mean?
Doc: It means your future hasn't been written yet. No one's
has. Your future is whatever you make it. So make it a good one,
both of you.
Marty McFly: We will, Doc.
And then the Doc flys off in a flying train.
Even
Ronald Reagan himself quoted the first movie's end line, "Roads,
where we're going we don't need roads."
So perhaps the feel good humor
portions of
Time-Rider might just be due in part to inspiration I got as a
teen watching this great movie series. I even got a chance a few
years back to ride the Back to the Future ride at Universal in
Florida. Very, very cool ride. unfortunately, I hear it's recently
been closed. Oh well, if I just had a time machine I could go ride
it one more time.
