Dark Reign is an comic book storyline that began in December 2008. Published by Marvel Comics, it deals with the aftermath of the Secret Invasion limited series, which led to a shift of power in Marvel's main shared universe, the Marvel Universe, toward Norman Osborn.
Overview
Following the events of Secret Invasion, Norman Osborn has taken control of S.H.I.E.L.D., with the original disbanded and reformed into "H.A.M.M.E.R.", after the original became too corrupted and destroyed by the Skrulls. Iron Man has been removed as Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., and has become the world's most wanted villain due to his inability to stop the Skrulls, even StarkTech is taken over and becomes Oscorp. The Avengers and Fifty State Initiative has become the Thundebolts Initiative. Osborn is later seen talking to Namor, Emma Frost, Doctor Doom, Loki, and Hood about an unelaborated plan. Bendis describes the planning behind this Dark Illuminati as "[t]he idea was, in the original pitch, that there was a secret group, a cabal, that got put together that was the mirror image of the Illuminati, with five or six characters who almost mirrored the other group."[4] They create the Dark Avengers, the newest pro-government sponsored Avengers team. Osborn then steps down as Director of the Thunderbolts team.
