Hex #1, 1985.
Hex #1, 1985.

Jonah Hex's original western series was cancelled during Crisis on Infinite Earths (in which Jonah also appeared along with Scalphunter and other western heroes, issue #3, 1985), but Jonah moved to a new 18-issue series titled Hex, penned by Michael Fleisher. In a bizarre turn of events, he found that he had been transported to the 21st century and became somewhat of a post-apocalyptic warrior reminiscent of Mad Max. The series had mediocre success in the United States but was critically acclaimed and well received in Great Britain, Italy, Spain and Japan.

The Hex series was according to the creators the only way to keep Jonah Hex alive in comics.

Other Appearances

The Post-Apocalyptic Hex made an appearance in a solo game module of DC Heroes titled "Hex: Escort to Hell".

In the Justice League Unlimited Animated series episode "The Once and Future Thing, Part 1: Weird Western Tales", Jonah has an interesting conversation with Batman-

"Fancy gun belt you got there. I'm thinking you folks are time travelers - Jonah Hex. Batman: "Where would you get a crazy idea like that?" Hex: "Experience. I've had an interesting life." - Hex is referring to his time in the 21st century in the Nuclear ravaged world of Hex.
