10 Best Sushi Restaurants in Barcelona

Barcelona is famous for it’s tapas, paella and hearty traditional Catalan dishes such as botifarra amb mongetes (sausage with haricot beans). However, Barcelona also boasts a selection of excellent sushi restaurants – ranging from the Michelin starred Koy Shunka to the trendy Japanese-Brazilian fusion restaurant Ikibana.

Tatami Room

Situated in the Poble Sec neighborhood, the Tatami Room opened in 2010. The restaurant is inspired by the Japanese izakaya, a type of informal Japanese gastropub. The downstairs dining area has two tatami areas, where guests remove their shoes to sit on large cushions around low tables in the traditional Japanese dining style. The menu consists of a selection of uramaki sushi rolls, nigiris, and sashimis, as well as a kitchen section of noodles, seaweed salads, gyoza, tempuras, grilled meats and teppanyaki dishes.

Located on the charming Passatge de la Concepció, which connects Passeig de Gràcia and Rambla de Catalunya, El Japonés features large wooden tables that can be shared and sushi being prepared within view. The restaurant is owned by Grupo Tragaluz, a family business that also owns the nearby Hotel Omm and other local restaurants such as Bar Lobo in the Gothic Quarter.

Koy Shunka chef and co-owner Hideki Matsuhisa was born in Toyota, Japan in 1972. After some years of working in Tokyo since age 19, he arrived in Barcelona in 1997. The restaurant was awarded it’s first Michelin Star in 2013.
